Topic: RE: Any Salem Hospital Patient's out there????
I wish I could be a Salem Hosptial patient. My husband works for Salem Hospital but they won't do my RNY surgery because I already have a Lap Band (having lots of problems with it) and am switching, hopefully, to the RNY. I am considered a "revision" patient and Salem Hospital is a newer program that doesn't do revisions yet. So.... I am forced to look elsewhere and petition Great West Healthcare to approve my surgery elsewhere. But... I may attend some of there support groups if it works out.

good sam has a support group. Patterson did my band surgery. She knows what she's doing in there! Mine was video taped for student doctors and broadcast live to a seminar. ;)

I don't know about Good Samaritan but OHSU does have 3 support groups each month. 1 night one and 2 day groups. The first day group and the night group have a "topic" of interest While the 2nd day group is just a general meeting. I think they have the info up on their web site. The topic groups are usually pretty good. I'm even trying to go to the one exactly a week after surgery because the topic is How to Thrive!

Hi, I too am going through Good amaritan for consult. Although, I am planning on having a VSG with a doctor in San Francisco. I am batteling my insurance co, due to their "investigational" bs labeling for VSG.. So funny, that here I am trying to do prevenative medicine, but that would make to much sense. lol Good luck with Emma, she is great at band and RNY. I live in Tigard and have two boys 3 yrs and 5 months, so I feel your busy pain.. Hey have you attended any of the support group sessions? I wonder if they are any good.

I had not heard back from my insurance company still when today, totally unexpectedly, I got a letter from the WL Center telling me that I have been referred!! On my way!!! Thanks for putting up with me while I was dealing with that bit of craziness... now, it all comes down to whether or not the MD approves me. So, so stoked!!!

We have PEBB and switched over from kaiser to blue cross so the lapband would be covered.

Kouri,
I didn't have to do any pre-op tests. They did them in Mexico. I did pay cash for my surgery. My current insurance won't pay at all. It was $10,000 plus travel. I've been post-op since January. Since I've been able to eat solids, I've focused on low fat protein and produce. As long as I stay away from carbs, I can lose weight.
I think VSG is the best surgery. Of course, I'm biased. :-) When I read about the experiences of those who have had gastric bypass or RNY, I just shudder. It was SOOOO much easier for me. I didn't have as much weight to lose as most do.
I've had to learn to eat slowly. My body tells me when I've had enough (which I"m not used to).
I would do it again in a heart-beat.

Hi, thank you for responding to my posting. I would like to know if you did pre op tests through Oregon Weight Loss @ Legacy Good Sams? what was your expierence with them? I assume that you did cash pay for the surgery? How long have you been post op and what sort of advice can you offer about being sucessful. I guess that is a good start for now, thank you again for any advice.
