24 days Post-op with questions

I am just over 3 weeks post op and was hoping to get some advice. I lost just under 20lbs in the first 2 weeks and in the last 10 days I have only lost 1.5 lbs, is this normal? My concern is that it is the same time that I started back on soft food from the liquid diet. I keep thinking that I must be eating too much, but when I log my food there is no way it is possible. Also I am fighting nausea, especially first thing in the morning. Anyone have some tips that worked for them? Any idea how long until I can get into a pool? Thanks for any help!

Hi Tomasina, 21 1/2 pounds in three weeks is amazing progress! You will have to get used to the ebb and flow of the weight loss. My mantra in the first six months was to just do what I was supposed to do (i.e., drink all my water, get in all my protein, take my supplements, etc.) and have faith. This early out I don't think you CAN eat so much that it would be considered a reason for not losing weight fast enough. If anything, a lot of people's loss slows because they aren't getting enough calories. The body thinks it's in starvation mode and holds tight to the fat. In my first year I think I averaged 20 pounds a month. There were definately times when the loss would stop for awhile, yet it didn't match my eating/excercise pattern at the time (as in I was being REALLY good). Other times I would get on the scale and have lost five pounds since two days earlier. In the long run the progress will be there - I promise! I didn't experience much nausea - can't help on that. I would sometimes feel it after eating too much and would find laying down for a while seemed to help it pass, but that wouldn't help on just getting up for the day. You will have to do what your surgeon says on when to get back in the pool. Patty

Hi! I wouldn't worry about the weight loss issue you're asking about. Quite honestly, 21 1/2 pounds is very good! I'm almost 5 months out and I only lose about two weeks of every month. I weight myself only on Mondays (it's addicting!). Some Mondays I've lost zero from the previous Monday, while other Mondays I step on the scale and I'm down seven pounds! I remember battling with nausea the first two months after my surgery. I couldn't even brush my teeth without gagging! It wore off over time, but you should check with your surgeon if you have any concerns. Ditto with the pool thing. I'm sure you'll have to wait until your incision(s) are healed. I was told to wait 6 weeks.

I also had that nausea feeling. Try drinking a protein drink a couple of oz. every hour. My nurse said it could be the blood sugar leval being down. Good luck on your journey. Marilyn
