I am currently trying to find out about liquid vitamins. I will be having my surgery the first part of May so am trying to find some answers to my questions. Do most people take vitamins? What about a monthly B12 shot? Sure would appreciate some answers. Thank you.

Hey Cheryl! Congrats on your surgery date! I just wanted to say that, I've no idea about the vits. but you may want to post this on the main message board, they are great about giving helpful answers! I am still pre-op...another idea would be to talk with your surgeon and see what he/she suggests! Good luck! Jen M.

hello, If you are going to Kaiser, you must get a b-12 shot monthly. Multi's are a must too! Good Luck!!!! Sarah

Costco has a couple of liquid vitamins. I use the one I think is called Liquimax as it tastes better. I use that and also I found some really cool kid's pixie stix type vitamins at the Canned food Grocery Outlet. Winnie the Pooh. But they taste great and are easy to get down. I hate taking my vitamins, so I use every trick I can to get them in. I don't take the B12 shots but may end up doing that if I find I need to. So far (knock wood) I haven't had the need to, but have run on the edge at times. Dina

Yes! Vitamins are a MUST if you are having WLS. Any surgeon who tells you otherwise is obviously not keeping close tabs on his/her post-ops! Vitamins will depend on which surgery, whether or not your surgery includes malabsorption, and how distal (i.e., aggressive) your surgery is. B-12 is typically necessary for RNY post-ops because that surgery bypasses the gastric system and thus, the intrinsic factor mechanism. It's not a given for every surgery, however. Most important is the fact that we (all post-ops all surgeries) need to be proactive about their health and track their post-op labs and pay attention to those values - and adjust vitamins appropriately. Blessings, dina
