Ok someone told me that some doctors won't do WLS on a person whos BMI is over 50 or 52. What the heck? Why not, has anyone heard this?

Jennifer - I think that's a crock of crap. I guess some weird docs might but I have not heard of them! Dina

Uh, yeah, I second that crock of crap and add a pile of BS to it! The whole point of WLS is to operate on FAT PEOPLE!!!!!!! HELLO???????? I know people on this site with BMI's that were in the 70's or higher who had surgery. I would hunt around and find a doc you feel good about who has operated on people in your range, you will find that most of them have! Good luck! Brandi

Oh, and may I add something else to that??? LOL! That just has my panties all bunched up!!!! I am almost a BMI of 50, at 318lbs right now. Go surf the before and after pics, and other profiles....hundreds of people on this site have weighed in the 400lb range and did awesome post-op. It is gonna weigh on your mind, I know it will, so go ahead and set aside a few hours to read profiles and look at some of the awesome pics on this site, and you will feel much better! I haven't heard anything like that. The only thing I am aware of it that the larger the patient, the chance of surgery complications can increase slightly. Another thing to add is something from my surgeon. He indicated that sometimes they aren't able to do the lap procedure on some patients that are very large and have to do it open. Are you just starting to look into WLS? Nice to hear from someone in my neck of the woods, I'm in Brookings, OR. I am actually having a LAP RNY done on Tuesday. Good luck on your WLS journey, let me know if you have questions or just want to talk.

My sister has kaiser and they have told her you MUST have a BMI of over 50 to qualify... Theresa S has kaiser and had her surgery and her's was no where near that high.. so who knows.. your going to hear differarnt crap from differarnt sources.. There are doc's who won't do WLS on someone who has higher BMI's due to the higher risks involved.. I think that is smart. If the doc is not comfortable in his own abilities then PLEASE don't do them.. but there are MANY doc's out there who do and are very successful.. There is a lady on the MB (amy williams I think is her name) who did the special on MTV.. I don't know what her BMI is/was but her highest weight was 600+ she lost 90 lbs in "10" weeks.. and she is doing FANTASTIC.. she just posted on friday so you could go to the MB and scroll back to fridays posts and look for "90lbs in 10 weeks".. good luck!! and try not to listen to all the "someones" out there.. they will drive you nuts.. LOL Theresa

HI Jennier, I had my surgery in Feb of this year and my BMI was right at 60. It depends on your surgeon. Good luck!! Sarah G. 2/16/04 -130 lbs
