Hi everyone, New to this. I am on a fast track to surgery in Sept. I hope. I have only the labs to do now and off to an app. soon with Dr. Patterson. One question did anybody go a bit overboard with eating when they finally decided to do the surgery and they would never eat pizza or pasta again? Linda Pauline frye

It is VERY common for folks to overeat before surgery. I think those who don't have an easier time of it though. Also, some doctors require a bit of weight loss before they will do surgery. Try not to think of it like you are losing a best friend. You will still be able to have some of those things one day - just not in massive quantities. And the great thing about it is eventually your eyes shrink with your stomach. You will start to look at a portion you would normally consider meager and think "WOW - I just ate a LOT!" when in actuality you just have a tiny amount. I have had pizza but am careful it is loaded with protein and that it is very thin crust. I can dump on pizza crust. As for pasta, I will have it in one of the Weigh****chers smart ones meals I take to work sometimes. I just try to not overdo it. Dina

I think they call it the last supper syndrome, and yes we all go through it. I was eating everything I could think of like it was my last time. I do eat pizza, but I did try the de-lite by Papa Murphy's and didn't like it, now I just eat 1 piece of regular pizza and usually I don't get it all down but boy it tastes goooood! As far as pasta, I have to be careful eating it too much it has a tendancy to plug me up (sorry), so I try and eat it no more than once a week. You do eat regularly after awhile actually that is where I ran into trouble, eating the things I missed eating. You have to be careful with those dang carbs they call out to me constantly... I think I tried to hit every "favorite" one more time before surgery. I never would have believed it at the time, but I don't feel at all like I thought I would about missing those things. I really don't miss them, or think about them anymore. I have eaten some of them, tolerated them just fine. The difference is the portion size, and also that the expereince just doesn't hold the same pull anymore. I don't think everyone would agree or understand, but I think it was important for me, that I eat those things and say my goodbyes. I went to my favorite places, and drank real Coke. I haven't ventured into pasta yet, but last night I ate a piece of pizza. As Dinka Doo said, I made sure it was topped with chicken. It was sooo good, and it felt just fine. Patty

Thanks to all of you who have emailed me or posted a message to me. It is good to know I am not the only one with a panic button. Also today I finished all the required testing and meeting except the pre-op support group meeting. I will be going to that one after I see Dr. Patterson. thanks again

My surgeon's head nurse said "don't think you can't eat your favorites ever again, you CAN, just not for a little while, and then in very small portions." She said she gained 25 lbs before surgery eating everything she believed she couldn't have after surgery....it just gave her 25 lbs more to lose, in hindsight! I was set on Chinese food, but my bro talked me into Red Lobster...not really my favorite but it was very good. As for pizza, I'm two+ weeks out and last week on vacation, we went out for pizza. I had them order an all-cheese pizza and I just ate the cheese off a slice...I didn't eat the bread. Tasted good because of the seasonings...just eating a hunk of low-fat cheddar is getting at bit boring! Good luck! Michele
