One year and a month ago I was set to go in and have surgery. 4 days before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and it took 6 months to get my levels stabilize. In that time - depression a huge factor from losing out on a chance to be normal - I left my job, couldn't afford COBRA and moved to Oregon. So here I am and wouldn't you know it, the job I have has Providence insurance. They don't cover the surgery. Please help. How do people self pay? Who helps finance the surgery? What if your credit isn't great? Anyone? Thank you.

Heidi, Several people here have changed jobs in order to get the insurance that will cover WLS. It's something to consider. If you want to self pay, I think the least expensive way is going to Mexico. There are few people on the board who have done that as well. There are several places that finance WLS, Capital One Finance is one place, but I don't know what their credit requirements are. Somewhere on this website there is a list of finance companies. Spend some time surfing around this site and you will learn much! Good Luck Tammy

Well, I am one of those who went to Mexico. I had a wonderful experienced surgeon who has a stellar reputation. I am not the adventurous type, but after hearing others from Oregon who I knew went to him rave about him, then researching others who have been to him, I took the leap and was so very happy I did. This was the best answer for me, and now that I've been to him, I'm thankful I went to see him over someone else. I know that he takes that extra special care with his patients and he doesn't overwork himself (I think no more than 4 surgeries a week). That made me feel good to know that he was well rested and well rounded! You can look for a job that has good insurance, but if you decide you don't want to leave your current job, you can save up for Mexico. It was $8500 for the surgery includiing hospital costs. Include travel expenses and you will spend anywhere from $9000 to $10,500. I spent $10,500 because I took a friend and we stayed at a resort for over a week. If you want to know more, you can read my profile and/or email me and let me know if you have other questions. Dina

Hi, I am self-pay as well and have contemplated going to Mexico for the surgery however "follow up care" is crucial in the success of this surgery so I decided to keep trying to do it here in Eugene. I called our local hospital and asked them if they did payment arrangements they do if you have 12,000 down (which I don't). I told them that I had heard that they had a Surgical assistance program its called "The Bridge Program", basically they review two years of Tax returns and your family composition (how many in your family); and then pay any where from 25% to 100% of the hospital bill. I just had my consultation on Friday and have an application for this program being reviewed. On top of that the Surgeon that performs this also has a sliding scale fee and takes payments. There is hope!! Just keep with it. Usually Hospitals with Religious affiliations do have some programs to help financially you just have to know where to look. Good Luck!! Joyce
