Anyone know if UTI's are common after wls? I don't get them often but am having a hard time with one lately. I went through 1 course of antibiotics but it looks like it is BACK with a vengence. Do you think maybe the antibiotics aren't absorbed as well? Dina

Hi Dina Did your doctor do a culture and sensitivity? That way you know positively which antibiotic works on your infection. Takes a couple of days for the culture. Usually they put you on an antibiotic and then call you and switch if you need another one. hope you feel better dianne

I don't know the answer to whether they are more common after WLS. I know others on the board have been on antibiotics for various reasons, and haven't mentioned an impaired effectiveness because of being post-op. I haven't had a UTI for years, but I remember what a ***** they can be. I used to get them in my early twenties. Now that I am thinking of it, they used to call it "honeymoon disease". Gee....my surgeon has referred to the first six months post-op as the honeymoon phase. Maybe it is not only the easiest time to lose the weight, but ....well, I'm not suggesting any cause and effect here! Anyways, in addition to the antibiotics, my doctor used to send me home with orders to drink a six pack of beer or large quantities of cranberry juice. Guess which cure I chose? I don't think either of those helpful hints will help you. You don't need to dump on top of it. I would suggest tons of water (like you don't already do that) and getting a second antibiotic. Patty
