I have went through everything and will be having surgery in December. I have had a lifetime of diets and like everyone want to be successful with this surgery. I am paying out of pocket and I do not know which one to choose. Lapband or Bypass. I am 100 pounds overweight and otherwise healthy. If anyone has comments on either surgery I would greatly appreciate hearing them. Both positive and negative, let me have it:) Thanks in Oregon

My 2 cents-  WELL I am a huge supporter of BYPASS surgery- as band surgery is slower, and less restrictive then bypass- if your anything like me- I want a faster weight loss to pay for all the food I can not have any more- plus it is an incentive when your losing the weigh too - and with bypass you can still have alot of foods you should not have- witht he bypass- YOUR BODY says NO- and it makes you NOT eat that thing again!  So if you fail at diets- (as I did) then I suggent bypass!

Well I have research this for along time, and I have talked to my doctor, and I told him that I realize that the lap band seems to be the least successful, and he said u are right not many people realize that.  Also the lap-band is less invasive.  Hope that this helps.  Deb

From what I understand according to your reply you do not feel the lapband is successful? Thank you for your comments.

I feel that it CAN be as successfull as bypass, but you have to have th ewill power to make it work- (above comment should be lap band you can eat more of what you want- i wrote the wrong thing) bypass you cant eat like you use too at all! There fore more restrictive- YES more complication of the surgery- I WENT back in to the hospital with staple bleeding and had to be fixed- but I am perfectly fine now- a below comment- 50lb in 6 months- I am at 30 in 2 months- but even the DOC will tell you RNY is faster loss- I needed somethign to keep me motivated to make healthier eating habits,  I have done weigh****chers and lost the 20-30 lbs over 4 months- but it fizzled when I platued- you will platue with both surgeries, but bypass still kicks in and goes again as your tummy is smaller and absorbs less- what I like is my body says WHOAAAAA way to much fat in that meal, or WHOAAA to much sugar in that meal- you wont get that sick feelin with the band. In the end- it is each persons decision- I have heard horror stories on each- obstruction- (band) food stuck cant get through- cant eat anything - have to go in to have it fixed- my profile has my horror story, and many other have stories too! GOOD luck!

You have a surgery date and you haven't decided which surgery is right for you?

For me, I chose the lapband.  Ibelieve that it is a personal choice, best left up to each individual. It would have been helpful for your surgeon to suggest which was more appropriate for your situation.

Good luck!  When is your surgery date?  Mine is about a month away...I see we have the same surgeon.

I would recommend that you get a copy of Weight Loss Surgery:  A Lighter Look at a Heavy Subject, by Terry Simpson, MD.  He tells all about each surgery and lists the pros and cons of each one.  I chose the RNY because I wanted the malabsorbtion component along with the restriction.  I did not want the possibility of being able to out-eat the band.  Also -- I know this sounds weird, because I let them cut my guts, after all -- I didn't want a foreign object in my body and I didn't want a port under my skin that they would need to stick a needle in.  Anyway, Bran is right - it's a personal decision, but I think that book would really help you.
