I know a couple of folks who are using him.  I have to change my insurance coverage first and he only does gastric bypass. The insurance I have now will cover also but I would have to drive so far away that I am afraid it would be difficult to follow up and get the support I need/want. deb366

Looks like you're considering the Lap-Band.  Is that correct?

I had surgery with Dr. Read on 7/6/07! He is wonderful!! How far away are you from Corvallis?  If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Andi

Actually, I am considering the RNY, it is the only thing that Dr. Read does.  Currently my insurance that I have will cover lap band too but after consideration the RNY is what  I am probably going to get.   And Andi, I am about 1 plus hours away since I live on the coast.  Everybody I know seems to like Dr. Read (I have met him once).  My one friend raves about him and really trusts him. Thank you both- looks like there are a good number of folks in Oregon who are doing this!! deb366

deb,

Dr. Read's team can definitely work with you on scheduling appointments. Like your first few appointments; the program consult, the nutrition consult, blood work can be done the same day (I think all Nut consults are done on Wednesdays). They have a list of 5 or 6 Psych docs that they work with to do the evals. If I remember correctly, there is at least one Newport or  Lincoln City Dr on that list.

Do you think you'll need a sleep study? I went to my sleep consult and the sleep dr wasn't convinced I'd need to do the full study, so she sent me home with an oximetry machine. It is a little machine you attach to your finger while you sleep to measure your oxygen levels. I passed that, so didn't need the full sleep study.

A lot of all the other testing (if needed, I didn't having any other testing except the above) like EKG, can be scheduled for the same day too. I had my 1st information meeting with Dr. Read's team at the end of April and was approved for surgery at the beginning of June. They are a great team and we get great aftercare support too! Good luck while on your WLS journey!!

Cindy, were both you and your DH happy with Dr. Read?  How have you done in maintaining since it looks like you had WLS in 2004 and you DH did in 11/2004?? Thanks for the info. Deb366

I had RNY w/ Dr. Read on 2/2/05.  I have done my follow-up for the most part with him, but do all my labs w/ my PCP.  I can't attend the support group either which is a bummer.  It isn't that it is so far away, but rather I always work on Saturdays.  He is an hour south of me.

I had a good experience and the hospital was tops!  He has a good crew.  Just make sure your PCP is also in your corner and willing to work with you in the future should your labs say you need additional supplimentation.  It can make it a much better experience.
