Post-Op day 2

Hi all!

I made it! From what I understand my surgery went really well. Only took about an hour and a half. Recovery was rough. So much pain. And because ther is as some kind of foul up with the transfer to the unit, I couldn't get pain meds for almost 2 hours. I hardly slept between my pain and my roommates snoring, there was no peace to be found.

Post-Op day 1. God I wish there were words to explain just how horrible the gas pain was. I don't think anyone could tell you anything that prepares you for that. I was taking my pain meds pretty well every 2 hours, and doing my best to get up walking in my exhausted state. The walking worked though. And I started passing gas around supper time. Holy man, what a relief that was. I was working on getting my fluids in, but I spend a lot of the day half asleep.

Today is day 2 and I feel a million times better than yesterday. Full fluids today and so far that's going alright. I'm being discharged and will be headed to a hotel for a few days before going home. It will be nice to shower and relax.

Congrats!

Everything you are feeling or did feel was like me too. I had a ton of pain, I had a roommate in the hospital that during the night she would moan and groan and scream. I got up in the middle of the night went to the Nursing station and said "GET ME A PRIVATE ROOM NOW OR ANOTHER ROOMMATE!" I got a private room thank god. I mean we are supposed to be healing and sleep promotes healing how does one heal when they can't sleep!

Yes the gas pains are nasty. My shoulder ached so bad I wanted to die. The only thing that helped me was to burp, fart and walk as much as I could. I did laps around the nursing station. And when I got home I walked from my kitchen to the front door and back as much as I could to get the gas moving, it does go away by day 3 or 4. Hang in there.

Drink fluids like its your job. Don't worry about trying to get in the 60-80 grams or protein, its near impossible at this stage. This is why the Vets always say "walk walk walk and sip sip sip.

Just a tip, not sure how far you have to drive home but the seat belt over your new incisions hurts. I was told to bring a pillow from home and to put the pillow between the seat belt and my abdomen. It helped soooooo much. Plus going over bumps was killer, it hurt so being able to hold the pillow was such a relief. If you didn't bring a pillow maybe a blanket rolled up or a hoodie or jacket.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the reassurance that what I?m feeling is normal. There are so many things you experience that you are in no way prepared for. If you?ve had kids you understand when I say I feel like I gave birth again. You know how you feel when your insides are all shifty? Totally what i?m getting right now.

My drive home is 4-5 hours depending on traffic/weather. I will definitely keep the pillow tip in mind.

I wonder if crazy roommates are a thing. I had my surgery on 2/9 and my roommate was a long term patient. First 10 minutes he told me he's had 118 roommates and he'll have more after me.

Nurse at Guelph really helped with him.

Gotta agree with the pillow saved me on the ride to Toronto from Guelph.
