Hernia and Gallbladder Removal 6 years out!

I used to be quite active on this site but left to move on to other things.

Just wanted to share what is going on as I've always found this group to be supportive and full of information.

I had RNY in May of 2012 in Ottawa. I was discharged from the Ottawa WMC in June of 2017.

In February of this year I had a gallbladder attack/hernia pain/not sure. I ended up calling 911 because the pain was so severe. There was a bit of a complication trying to be seen at the Civic but luckily I saw a surgeon a few days later.

I have gallstones for sure and she wants to remove my gallbladder. She also thinks that I have a hernia and wants to do exploratory surgery to check.

I'm not worried or anything but it's crazy that after almost 6 years with no complications I end up in this situation.

Welcome back Katie! I'm still pre-op but have had my gallbladder out years ago. I've had a bunch of surgeries in my life and that one was the easiest! Even though you are 6 years out, the stones could have been developing over time and just causing you problems now. You will feel SO much better after it is gone. Hope your surgery is easy and you are feeling 100% soon!

I haven't been active either but I thought I would check k in. I had my 6th month visit yesterday and all my levels are great except my liver ebzenzy. Apparently this is common after surgery and normally related to gallbladder. I was told to keep an eye on symptoms and work with my family doctor about this. They did tell me it is extremely common to require a gallbladder removal post surgery.

It is very common. Just strange so many years out. When I searched up the topic on this site I even saw that some surgeons take out the gallbladder at the same time as weight loss surgery.

Hi there! You don't mention the surgeon's name but you are in good hands if you saw Dr.Amy Neville or Dr.Nicole Kolosvari as both also do gastric bypass surgeries in addition to general surgery involving gall bladders and hernias. Dr.Mamazza and Dr. Yelle are two other surgeons at the Civic specializing in what you need doing, so plenty of suitable surgeons at the Civic with gastric bypass experience.

Wishing you an uneventful surgery and excellent recovery, you will be in good hands!

Yes. Dr. Kolosvari is the surgeon I have been seeing but when I signed the consent form it listed all the surgeons.

I can't even pronounce her name, let alone spell it so thank you :)

I might actually have the surgery at the Riverside as it's day surgery.
