ONE YEAR SURGIVERSARY

Well, the weather is about the same - cold, sunny and clear skies. I was hopeful and thankful on my way to the hospital in Guelph, and even more so today.

Like all of us, I had "number" goals I wanted to achieve: hit onederland - check, hit my first goal of 175 - check, lose 100 lbs. - check, hit my wedding weight of 157.5 (weighed in this morning at 157.6 so I consider this a check), and hit normal BMI (154) - soon to be checked.

What I have learned to be more important than the numbers is the virtual and real feeling of freedom. My schedule is set most days and I eat what and when I should and thankfully, for the most part, don't experience much temptation. I am good not eating starches and added sugar over 10 grams. I have the odd gingerbread cookie and yogurt popsicle, and eat berries and plain yogurt with sweetener instead. None of this is easy, but it is a conscious choice. My "treats" over the years and the "freedom" of eating what I want when I wanted was no freedom at all. I was unable to be as active as I once was - which added to more restrictions and a higher weight gain.

I can now paddle in a canoe, walk easily without being winded, I'm going white water rafting in May with my husband on a trip to Tennessee, and can go into any store trying on a size 10 or small/medium and it fits. I'm sleeping well, eating well, exercising regularly and will measure to see the overall reduction in my measurements - knowing it will be a massive change.

I can honestly say this is the best choice I have ever made for myself concerning my health. And the support, advice and encouragement I have received from members and friends from this site has made all of the difference in the world.

I thank the taxpayers of the Province of Ontario for their gift and I will repay them by not developing diabetes, needing a knee replacement, nor having a stroke or a heart attack (lol). Truly though, we are fortunate to have such a program that provides us with the "tool" towards better health. How we use it though will determine our long term success and I don't plan on failing.

Thank you. I wish you all continued success.

Linda

Love ALL of this, but especially "None of this is easy, but it is a conscious choice." - SO TRUE!

CONGRATS on your surgiversary!!! Sounds like it has been a great year and that you are continuing to put this tool to work in the best way. I'm so happy for you. I know that you are an inspiration to others as you have truly inspired me throughout my WLS journey. Keep up the great work, and enjoy your white-water rafting trip - that sounds like a lot of fun.
