Please help about fluid in take
I am 3 says post op, they did the sleeve. Anyway I am trying to get in my fluids. One boost diabetic is 237ml. How much can I drink at a time? It is has been 1½ hours and I so far have only been able to drink half. If I have a sip it hurts for a second and then I hear a girgling sound and the pain stops. Is it because I am full or is it just left over gas from surgery and I can still drink some more? How much at a time should I take and how far in between? They didn't tell me much at the hospital
Thanks for your help.

Are you able to measure how much you're taking with each sip? At 3 days out I was still taking 30 mls over 15 minutes. So like 10 ml every five minutes. Maybe you're sipping too much each time? It's hard to gauge but I used the medicine cups, set a timer on my phone for 15 mins and finished the 30 mls over that tome period. How much you can take in per sip gets better over time, particularly if you're getting enough water in. I found once I was up to 1500 ml. a day by sipping constantly everything went in much smoother. My dietician said it was because when you are behind on fluids the pouch swells a bit and more fluid helps it heal properly. Hopefully taking smaller sips over longer periods helps you. Otherwise I'm not sure. Or maybe the diabetic boost is too much for your system yet, I couldn't have diluted apple juice even in very small amounts as it was painful. Good luck!!

The first four days it took me ALL day to drink a 375 ml Premier protein. Now I can do it broken up in to two sets of an hour. It will come. Don't worry too much about drinking enough, if you are constantly sipping small amounts all day, pretty much the water bottle doesn't leave your hand the first few days except when "eating", you'll be okay. I also found cream soups went down easier than yogurt at first. I could do 1/4 cup of soup in 20 mins but same of yogurt took fourty five minutes. It all comes with time, just pace yourself and always sip and you'll be good.

I remember it taking forever to get those shakes in. If I managed one in a day I was thrilled.
Just keep sipping and sipping and sipping. I used those little cups from the hospital and sipped away.
You can try some sugarfree jello and broth as well to mix it up.
It does get easier. :)

It's funny how all of a sudden it just changes and you can't put down more water in your sips...now I'm worried I'm drinking too many mls at once because I can so easily! It's like 30 mls took fifteen minutes before...now it takes two!

Congrats on your surgery!
Awwww liquids! They sure are hard when you are fresh post op!
So do you know the medicine cup that you get in the hospital. I was told to drink TWO (2) medicine cups full of liquids every 15 minutes (most medicine cups are 1oz size), you can get them of of Amazon or I have seen someone suggest going to the Dollar Store and buying those disposable shot cups and using those. Yes it takes forever to drink something but better to go slow than hurt yourself. The Vets will say to fresh post ops "Make drinking liquids like your job."
Note that temperature of liquids can make you feel uncomfortable. Try cold, warm or room temp and see what works best. Quite a few of us post surgery become lactose intolerant, I did, so a milk based protein shake might be upsetting your tummy. You can get chewable Lactaid pills.
We all have stomachs/pouches that groan, gurgle, talk, and make lots of funny noises. That's normal.
I do want to stress that keeping hydrated is key right now. Drink tea, diet juice that has been diluted 2:1 so two parts water, one part diet juice, water, water with flavours like Mio or Crystal Light and don't forget SUGAR FREE popsicles count towards liquids. You can also freeze your protein shake into a popsicle mold and eat it that way. If you can get in two protein shakes a day (let's say Premier Protein) that is 60 grams of protein. That would be amazing for a few days post op. But keeping hydrated is #1.
Best of luck, sip sip sip and then walk walk walk to get rid of that gas and then sip sip sip some more

10+ years post op, living & loving life!
I can only reiterate what everyone else is saying definitely go with the little medicine cups, it took me 1-1/2 hours to finish my first protein shake, I'm still finding the sweeteness an issue, then even though I could drink faster I added a cup of milk so it wouldn't taste as bad (I like milk), but yesterday 7 days post surgery I was able to drink an uncut shake in about 45 minutes while cooking dinner. (my husband owes me).
I found it was really important the first few days to measure sip quantities, about 3 days out I woke up in the night and had a gulp of water without thinking and it was really uncomfortable, it gets better day by day.
But welcome to the talky stomach side, I've been quite surprised at all the sound my new "stomach" is making.
