Lactose Intolerance after Surgery?

Anyone here experience lactose intolerance after surgery?

In the last couple of days I've noticed bloating, discomfort, gas pains, cramping and a whole lot of gurgling after eating. I thought maybe I was easting too fast so I have seriously slowed down but that doesn't seem to have helped any.

I had a Premier Protein for breakfast this morning, but the same symptoms happened after that as well. I notice milk is one of the main ingredients.

I'm going to remove milk from my diet for the rest of today and see what happens.

I'm interesting in hearing if anyone has dealt with this.

Thankfully, I have not had the pleasure. It would be good for you to omit dairy for a few days and see if that helps.

I noted that somethings are okay, while others are not and those items keep changing. I can eat scrambled eggs and fried, but poached or hard boiled bothers me. 1.5 is fine, where if I have one forkful too much, I suffer for about an hour. I stay away from sugar, but learned that a bite of a cookie is no trouble, but a sip of a smoothie from McDonalds makes me throw up.

Be careful not to assume too much. After surgery we think all pain and discomfort is because of WLS and our new pouch. I had a bad kidney infection that went too far because I thought the pain was from the stuffed peppers.

Keep us posted and remember a phone call to the bariatric staff at your hospital may provide you with some of the information you need.

Thanks Linda.

My clinic is closed today but I shall be calling tomorrow.

Interestingly enough, I just had some egg salad for lunch and it went down just fine. No issues.

I'll be keeping a close eye and I am going to remove dairy for the next couple of days.

one thing to keep in mind is speed. I have to be careful with any liquid meals (like premier). if I even take one gulp too big, I will dump. it isn't the premier protein itself, it was the speed I was drinking it that was the problem (I have one every day).

are there other foods that have milk that have caused the same problem (eg cheese)?

So you need to be careful and consider was i drinking mindfully and slowly with small sips? if yes, it could be a lactose issue. but with bariatric surgery it isn't just what you eat. it is how you eat too. your symptoms could be mild dumping.

I have read on this forum that some have developed lactose intolerance after surgery. Try using Lactaid milk and see if it makes a difference. Premier Protein is not whey protein isolate, but a blend including I believe calcium caseinate. There are plant based protein powders, egg white based, bone broth. Go to a supplement store - Popeye's, GNC, Nutritional House etc. and tell them you may be lactose intolerant and ask for samples of the other types of protein to see what you like and can tolerate. Some may give you samples and others sell sample packs. The further out from surgery you are, the less you will need to rely on protein shakes and powders.

Well, I spoke with the clinic this morning and by my symptoms they tend to think I have become lactose intolerant. I have a follow up appointment next week so they will check me out further then. I'm now waiting on a call from the Dietician to figure out how to get my protein in, dairy free. Bummer.....

That is a bummer. It may be short term. Hopefully. Feel better quickly. No doubt they'll help you with alternatives that will meet your targets and have you feeling well again soon.

I'm hoping it's short term too.

In the meantime I have found lactose free greek yogurt which went down just fine.

I'm going to try lactose free milk and try and find a soy based protein shake to substitute for the Premier Protein Shakes.

Typically I only need one shake a day so at least I'm getting enough of other things into me right now.
