Checking In With An Update
Hi All,
So my last post was just after I got home from surgery and things were going pretty good.
And then the wheels fell off quickly and frighteningly. Things have been rough.
Suffice to say, everything is good now and thank God for the Bariatric Team and Surgeons at St. Joseph's Hospital.
I'm also very lucky that my sister was staying with me and took charge. Please don't think you can do this alone. I did and didn't want help. My sister insisted. Take the help. We need it.
So I developed extreme pain in my lower back. Friday at 11:00 am the pain started and it escalated and escalated, it moved to my abdomen and was unrelenting. I couldn't ease the pain, couldn't get ahead of it, and then stopped drinking, and the dye was cast.
Off to the Emergency we went.
After a Cat Scan, morphine, IV and a visit from the most wonderful surgeon, Dr. Beaudreau, I was advised that I had a obstruction in my bowel. I had to go back into surgery immediately. There was no waiting on this.
At 1:00 am I had emergency surgery to fix the obstruction. My bowel had a kink in it. Once the kink was straightened out, everything started flowing again.
I was very lucky. I spent Saturday and Sunday back in hospital and am home again today.
I'm getting everything in, drinking well, had some milk today, and tomorrow I'm going to try some soup, and yogurt.
I chose to post this story not to frighten anyone but to those of you who are coming up for surgery, please make sure you are not alone after surgery when you come home. Listen to your body. If you are not passing gas - get back to the Hospital. If something doesn't seem right - GO BACK!
I'm the type of person who doesn't like to bother people. I don't want to be a pain. If my sister had not insisted, my outcome may have been entirely different.
I'm still glad I did this. Every day things are getting better. I had a scare, the surgeons, who are absolute angels, IMO, literally saved my bowel and maybe more. It's in the past, and I'm moving forward, albeit slower than anticipated.
I'm good. I'm happy. I'm being careful. Listen to your bodies after surgery.
I'll catch up again soon, with wonderful news of my successes and NSV's.
Good Luck Everyone!

It is a very good cautionary tale, I too don't usually want to "bother" anyone but one really needs to listen to one's body after surgery.
Fingers crossed it is smooth sailing from now on
