Hello there,

I am a new member from Toronto,Ontario. My BMI is 39 and have no complications like diabetes or cardiac issues. I am 40 years and seeking advise on how to get started on this journey. I am wanting to get gastric sleeve done but my family doctor says I won't qualify with a bmi of 39 and no complications. Please advise how to go about this.

thank you all in advance for your comments.

Ask you doctor if he will refer you so that you can do the Optifast program. Unfortunately it doesn't look like you qualify for surgery. There is self pay, but it is extremely expensive and you would probably not receive the same level of followup care. The OBN reviews your health records for previous years, so you have to show that have comorbidities and that you have documented attempts at supervised diets.

You need a BMI over 40 with no other health issues. As well you need to have tried supervised and documented weight loss programs etc...

RNY is the Gold standard in Ontario and a sleeve is only done for specific health issues. As the others wrote try for the medical program.

Good luck in your journey

Do you snore? If you do, you could ask your doctor to recommend that you get a sleep study done. If you have sleep apnea then you would be eligible. That's what happened to me. I went to the doctor so exhausted all the time. She said that maybe I had sleep apnea. My bmi was below 40. It's been a life changer for me! All the best with your journey.
