Dr's target weight vs mine

at my dietitian appointment she said they expect my target weight to be 205-220lb. This is still overweight / obese. I said my target is to get to normal weight for me height (around 170lb for 24.5 bmi or just over 25 bmi which is around 180lb). She said this is unrealistic and I'm setting myself up for disappointment. I actually thought this was more than reasonable and now I'm questioning myself!

The dieticians say you'll lose 60 to 80% of your excess weight from the surgery, so by their math you won't ever be within a normal BMI.

It is possible to continue losing weight after the bulk has come off from the surgery, it will just take a bit longer.

OH is a good example of plenty of people getting to normal BMI. I'm now a 20 BMI. It's totally possible.

I think you should go for your target weight. You are the one living in your body and many people your height weigh the weight you want to, so why shouldn't you? I am about 8 or 9 pounds away from not being obese anymore and I can tell you that although I feel and look much better, I am certainly not done losing weight yet! I have a long way to go yet.

Go for gold!

That was like my dietician as well. They wanted me at 199 and I'm 5'9 which would put me at a bmi of 29. I'm now 166. My original personal goal was 175 and I've now revised it to 160. Long reach goal is 150-155.

Set your own personal goal for you. It'll happen!

These comments are really helpful thank you. I honestly thought I was being conservative with my estimates because for my height I should be 144lb to 174lb so I was trying to be over that for their sake more than mine lol.

I'll need to wait and see how I feel when I hit the 1's but I would think if I'm getting plastics etc as I intend (I'm 99.999% sure I'll need them) then I want to be at a stable and reasonable weight for my height.

I had the same thing happen to me... I'm only 5'2, and their goal weight for me was 180 to 195. I thought that was really high, but because I had read about the "inflated" goal weights here, I just smiled and nodded and said my life would be completely different at that weight.

Honestly, my life would be completely different at that weight... considering i was 308 sitting in that chair that day. Does that mean I accept that as my goal weight for myself? No. But that's good enough for now, good enough to get me into surgery. Where I will end up... I don't know. I've never not been obese as an adult. So I'm excited to venture down down down. See where I get. And certainly get below 180!!! :)

Thanks! Honestly... I grew up in a home where people yelled instead of spoke. I was abused as a child. Life wasn't always great. I learned that my happiness is within my control, and every day I have a choice... to be happy with what I have, or change what I don't prefer.

Im not saying it's been easy. It's been a journey, and it still is. I'm 46 and just dealing with my weight now. I've been working on my inner self for years. Ive learned not to be angry or bitter for what's "dealt" to me. Everything is in my control. I never live at the effect of life... and so I am happy, positive, and work daily to improve on what I have and what I want to have. :)

I set staged goals. The first being 170's which was high end of overweight and then every 10 or so lbs after. I told myself I'd be happy there (and I was) but that I wouldn't stop until I wanted to. When my dietitian told me to start trying to maintain at around 170, I smiled and said I wasn't ready yet. Started trying to maintain about 5lbs over the normal BMI range because I was already comfortably in the healthy body fat range. I'm about 4-5 months into maintenance and have lost about 17 lbs since I started trying to maintain...still getting the hang of it, obviously :)
