Low vitamin D before surgery....

I discovered I have low vitamin D this past August. I was put on 4000 units of D per day. My bloodwork from last week is showing it is still quite low. In addition to my supplement I try to have greek yogurt and at least 1 cup of milk a day. I also go outside when I can.

I am worried that this will pospone surgery. I have already been working to increase it for 3 months without a lot of change.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know of ways to help it increase it quicker? THANKS

I had to take a ****tonne of vitamin D before surgery too. i think they said mine was still low when i had my surgery but they told me it would increase after with supplements. unless they tell you to worry i wouldn't.

I agree with rce... keep doing what you're doing, and don't worry about it until they tell you to worry about it. My vitamin D was low pre-surgery too, and they put me on 4,000 IU's, but I don't know if it self corrected, because they never mentioned it again, and I didn't see my pre-surgery blood work.

My three month bloodwork is fine... well, as far as vitamin D goes. Lol

Many of us (if not most) have low D going in to surgery. :)

When I we t to my nutrition appointment my Vitamin D was sky high, she even remarked how high it was.

It was a vacation to the beach in North Carolina. A lot of sun.

Now I have a friend who struggles with vitamin D and (as a cancer survivor I can not tell you to do this in peace) she tans once a week for 4 minutes.

BUT I would agree with rce and The number one lady.

Mine put me on 7000 units a day. Low vitamin d is pretty common. Mine was super low. I meet my surgeon next week and have only gotten one blood test and the beginning of this journey.

I had the same problem. I had to take 8000 units of vitamin D a day for 6 months just to get it to the bare minimum. Then I went back to taking 1 pill a day (1000 units) and it dropped too low again. My doctor said I'll have to take 2 a day, probably forever. I wasn't scheduled to meet the surgeon until the levels came up enough. I felt much better when they came up. I was outside every day in summer but my doctor said I can't get enough from the sun alone, due to living so far north.

I am taking 5,000 units a day, I neglected my levels and they were very low, I am a few years out from surgery and working on raising all my vitamins.

make sure you are taking vitamin D3 and NOT vitamin D2

Doctors normally prescribe D2 but is really not the one we need before or after surgery, good luck!! you will be just fine but keep working on it.
