Warm winter gear

OMG I am turning into an icicle! Since surgery I have no tolerance for cold, I take two hot showers a day, wear wool socks, use a heated throw at home and a shawl and heater at work. And it's not even really winter yet. I don't think I will survive January and February.

My winter coat is from Addition-elle and even though it's down filled it's not very warm (plus the zipper splits). Can anyone suggest a winter coat that's under $300, in sizes up to 20, and isn't hideous?

Depending on what style you want, Columbia is the cat's ass and that's coming from someone that actually lives where it hits -40C often. They hare short ski style jackets then longer car coat lengthy style.

I found a great winter coat in size 2x last year at Winner's . Check them out they have great deals too.

You are probably going to drop sizes very fast. Many on here have found good coats at Value Village without dropping a lot of dollars. Remember the coat will only fit you for a short time, so I would save your money this winter and get an adorable coat next winter in a much smaller size. Scarves can pretty up a coat for now.

The other thing that helps is fleece lined leggings under your pants, and fleece lined t shirts work well. I think Groupon has a sale on 3 packs of fleece lined tops. I am 3 years out and it does get better.

If you don't find anything at Value, check out Giant Tiger. That's where I got my fleece lined leggings.

I would suggest layering. It saves you from buying a really nice coat that doesn?t fit you for long. My winter coat is from Old Navy plus size.

I am going through the very same thing, it's unreal! I have to ware socks, flannel Pj's, sweater and use my heated blanket with a blanket over that to help keep the heat in. Thank god our SUV has heated seats, I agree with the ladies don't spend a lot of money on a coat. Layer up that's what I am doing, and try and find a real warm hat and mitts set. Last winter I lucked out and got 2 on clearance, one at the bay (a Calvin clean peacoat for 45$), the other at additionelle (a more sporty type one for everyday), both in December.

By the end of feb, early March, they were both way too big, and drafty. One thing I was happy with though, is the more sporty one I got for snowshoeing and doing stuff outside, had a drawstring waist, which kept me warmer, and from looking like a cartoon hahahah.

My two cents, but a decent cheaper coat, and spend the money on some thermal layers.

Oh no; I wish I would have read this a day earlier! I just gave away all of my heavy winter coats because I had to buy smaller sizes. I had a fantastically warm black winter coat that was like brand new, with a big hood and a double zipper. It was warm enough to keep me warm in Northern Ontario and cost a fortune new.

My new winter coat was only 20 bucks from value village, lol, but is nice and warm (but not as warm as my old one).

I'm cold all the time now too. I'm writing this wearing heavy fuzzy pajamas, under two thick blankets, with only my head and hands out of the blankets, lol. The house is set at 70% but I always feel cold.
