Be on top of your meds even in the hospital!

i had my RNY Surgery at Humber last week Friday. In the hospital I had to ask the nurse for the blood thinner injection. She said "Oh. They didn't ordered it for you. Let me go check." And it was in my room in about an hour. Case in point: if I hadn't said something who knows what could have happened.

then in the Rexall pharmacy on the main level I handed the pharmacist my scripts for the Prevacid. When I was in my hospital room the nurse gave me the pink tablet that dissolves on the tongue. It's the name brand version and is very easy to take after WLS. The pharmacist gave me generic tablets and said "you just open them and swallow them." Ummm no thanks. I asked her if she had the pink ones that dissolve on the tongue and she immediately changed them over. But again if I hadn't advocated for myself I would've been stuck with the original ones she had given me.

Don't be afraid to ask for what is right for you!

My meds got messed up in hospital too. They were supposed to order all my meds that I take at home, but somehow nothing got ordered. I had brought mine with me, so just ended up taking those (with their permission). They got some of my meds sorted out for night two, but not all, and I just figured it out myself.

Yes, you have to be aware, and always self advocate. Anyone who knows me knows that's my favourite thing. :)

Since I start Opti tomorrow I went to shoppers to fill my list of prescriptions. I told them I was having a wild and they called me later telling of the pill version or the tongue type you had in the hospital. I chose the second but it cost 42 dollar with my benefits. Worth it and I am glad I did after reading you post.

Glad I could help. Good luck on Optifast. You're almost there :)

Thank you for the heads up. I won't be at the same hospital, but it's still a good thing to remember.

Do they tell you about needing the blood thinner injection? Does everyone need it? Just curious, I'm not quite there yet but don't want to say hey, you forgot when I wasn't supposed to get it!!

Thanks

Lol. I had no clue til they showed up with a needle and I asked "what's that?" as they were about to poke me. I like to be informed with what I'm getting injected with... you know, my body and all. :)

Hi I'm at Humber. This is standard practice at my centre because clotting can lead to death.

TWH does not use blood thinners. Best is to just get up and move.
