Hi, I'm VF. I'm a 30 something female in the Ontario. I requested a referral from my family doctor in August after my endocrinologist could not make the referral. I got my letter in late September for an information session in November.

I have a lot of questions:

1 - What are the steps post the information session? I'm assuming labs and nutritionist meeting. Anything else?

2- Is 1 year a realistic timeline? If approved will I have surgery by this time next year?

3 - What type of questions did you wish you asked during the information session?

Hi VF, welcome!

The process varies a fair bit at each centre. To give you the best information, which centre are you going through?

Welcome VF,

I have seen people take advantage of cancellations or have a lot of flexibility to change appointments to speed through the process.... but a fair timeline with TWH would be a year to 18 months. That way you aren't disappointed if it takes you longer. For example I have heard currently from meet the surgeon appointment to surgery is 5 months apart.

After the information session you will meet a social worker, nutritionist, nurse, nutrition group class, psychologist then last the surgeon. You will have bloodwork done a possible sleep test if you have sleep apnea or indicators of having it. Other tests are possible if they feel they need them.

The information class gives you lots of material and informs you about lots . I didn't have questions or feel I wasn't prepared. You meet so many people along the way that will answer any questions you may think of.

I am 8 months post op... my starting weight was 272 and I am currently 182. I hope to get to 145lbs. Keep in mind you generally lose 65 to 85% of you excess body weight so keep your goals realistic.

Welcome and this group is a great support and will share lots along the way!!

Hi again VF,

Like Laura said, a 1 year timeframe for surgery at TWH is doable for most people. It will all depend on your particular medical needs. I am 5 weeks out from having RNY at TWH, and I had no additional testing required. I moved up every single one of my appointments significantly, including my orientation, by calling and asking if any earlier appointments were available due to cancellations.

From orientation to surgery, it took less than four months for me. And it was about a month from referral to orientation. I was very motivated, very driven to call for cancellations, my schedule was very flexible, and the most important thing: I was very nice even when I got a "no, nothing's available." I just tried again a few days later.

Wishing you all the best in your journey. :)
