Losing weight before pre-op diet

Congrats on your upcoming surgery!

I think you're on the right track. I focused on slowly phasing in all the changes, and post op behaviours shortly after my first info session.

i wouldn't get to hung up on actually losing weight, but focus more on the making the lifestyle changes sustainable. If you follow the plan, the weight will come off.

i started with tracking everything I ate. This was huge for me, in terms of finding patterns, and triggers. I also eliminated all liquid calories.

then I gradually reduced my carbs. And increased my activity level.

stopped drinking liquids with meals, eating mindfully etc. Just slowly adding more and more.

Surgery is overwhelming enough. The more you do before the easier the transition will be!

good luck!

That's exactly what I did. I got rid of pop, everything carbonated, eating protein first, cutting down on carbs and then the rest kind of fell into place.

It's not easy but if you do it slowly, one thing at a time then it's much more manageable and not as overwhelming.

My opinion, you should start making changes now for better success after. You don't have to eliminate the things you love, but moderation is the key. The sooner you start making changes the easier it will be.

lose what you can before surgery - that's that much less you'll need to lose after surgery. I lost 57 lbs before surgery, and I'm sure that really helped me in eventually being able to reach my goal.

also, you won't have to say goodbye to any food forever. For the first few months or a year, yes - but eventually you'll be able to tolerate pretty much everything again. The only thing that consistently doesn't sit well with me is greasy, fatty stuff, like fried chicken. I can eat a little of it, but that's it. But then again, I shouldn't be eating that stuff anyway - too high calorie.

I had my surgery on July 28, 2017. On May 8th I started cutting back and using Baritastic to keep track of everything. Upped my protein and decreased carbs. Started drinking protein shakes. I still had the odd indulgence, but I wanted an easy transition to Opti and then post op diet. I was eating 1000-1200 calories. By the day I was to start Opti I lost 25 lbs, and on Opti I lost 18 lbs, for a total of 43 lbs prior to surgery. I've lost 74 lbs so far. It definitely makes it easier in the end, and it gets you familiar with food and nutrition values prior so you're not trying to learn everything post op.
