Hi all,

I am two weeks out from surgery. Finally getting my protein in daily! My calories still seem really low. I am planning to have one more shake today, which will make my total calories 453, and carbs 16.

Can you please share if this is good, or too low at two weeks out.

I am moving to puréed foods on Monday. What should be my targets then?

Thank you!!!

I never counted carbs. Carbs (good carbs) are ok. Protein and portion should be your focus. At your 1 month ask the dietician. Its too soon to be counting calories. Im 6 months pregnant and 9 months out and get about 900 a day

Thanks! I just started doing the second shake a day... it's hard to get all the food in as it is. That's a relief. :)

I wouldn't worry too much about counting calories or carbs at this point. It's more important to focus on hitting water and protein goals for the first month after surgery when you're still healing. I only started to seriously pay attention to calories and macros at about 3 months out when I could finally start to eat relatively normally again I would say. As long as you're able to get in all your protein and water daily then that's what's most important! :) At the pureed stage, I ate a lot of tuna, melba toast, laughing cow cheese wedges, hummus, greek yogurt, and protein shakes. I didn't do pureed meats or anything because that thought just sounded nasty to me, LOL! So I practically lived off of canned tuna and premier protein to make sure I could get in as much protein as I could. In any case, it's good to track in order to get in the habit of it, but in the early stages I only tracked so I could make sure I wa****ting protein goals. If it's helpful for you, I've been tracking everything I eat since everyday about 2 weeks postop in MyFitnessPal, so if it's helpful you can check out my food diary here :) - http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/diary/avatarkorraa Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your food diary. That was helpful and interesting!!!

I appreciate the ideas around food, and your encouragement around not counting calories at this point.

I've been hitting my water goals for a while, and started hitting my protein goals a few days ago; so I'll just keep focusing on those for now.

No problem at all! :) Glad to hear you're able to get in those water goals!! That is so so important early postop - I actually got rehospitalized within my first 2 weeks postop because of dehydration, eek! (It wasn't anything serious though, I was just feeling super faint but I ended up going home the same day. After a few IV bags of fluid in the hospital I was good to go!). Best of luck hitting those protein goals as well! :)

Glad you got well quickly! Dehydration is serious.

The first month I didn't worry about calories or protein. I focused on getting in fluids. At the end of the first month we (our clinic recommendations) moved into soft foods with target calories between 450-600. In the 3-6 month range I moved up to 650-800 calories. I lost 98% of my excess weight by the end of month 11. I know every clinic has different guidelines, so yours might suggest something different.
