Timing of Vacation in Relation to Surgery Date

Hi All,

I got the word today that I may be able to expect surgery in January.

I take an annual vacation religiously to Alabama the first two weeks of every April. We drive, take food in a cooler, and get there in about a day and a half. We stop for the night the first night.

When we get to our vacation spot (it's an off season hunting lodge), we have dinners every other night in the lodge and the rest of the time we prepare our own. Also some dinners out with friends. I spoke to the Lodge owner and she has assured me that I can have access to her kitchen whenever I need and that she will assist me in preparing whatever I need for the dinners we have in the lodge. Melba is a saint.

So I have the food angle covered and I feel confident that I won't be challenged with my new dietary restrictions and needs.

My concern is timing.

How are most people feeling 10-12 weeks out from surgery? Barring any complications do you think this trip is doable for me next year?

I know there are lots of factors. I get that things may go wrong and I will deal with that and cancel my trip if need be.

I'm a good healer. I am no stranger to surgeries. I had a full hysterectomy with an open cut hip to hip and was back at work in 3 1/2 weeks. I was walking the dog in 2. Back at the gym on the treadmill and some light exercises at 4 weeks. I also had my gallbladder removed on a Friday and was back to work on Monday. No pain.

I know this is different. I need to be able to get food in to feel OK. This, in my opinion, is bigger than the other two surgeries.

I'd really like to hear your thoughts. TIA

Personally I think you will be but as you said that's barring you have no complications. You wouldn't even have known I had surgery two weeks post op. I had to see a different dr for something unrelated and he couldn't believe I was doing so well

Over 100 lbs lost! and 13 lbs below goal weight!

Talk to your surgeon. I'm scheduled for surgery on Monday. I have a conference in Orlando booked 7 weeks post op and an all inclusive 11 weeks post op. I got the go ahead from TWH for both. As long as you are able to kee eating on plan you should be fine.

You should be about 40 pounds lighter and able to eat a bit of most foods. I think you will feel great

I just talked to my surgeon yesterday about this. I have two trips planned. The first one is to Fredricton to pick up a car that I have just recently bought. He told me I have to wait for 6 week mark. (I just had surgery a few days ago). The next trip is to Hawaii in December...he said, "Go", "Have fun!"

Hope this helps.
