Hi I was just wondering how much everyone else saved up for surgery. I plan on being off a few weeks on ei, i only work part time so I will only get a portion of my no normal paycheque and have will have the usual one week of no pay. I have also included the cost of optifast in my savings. So far I have about $1500 set aside. How much did everyone else saved before surgery?

Thanks

Hi there,

I won't have surgery before next year but I have about $750 saved currently. I am saving my sick days at work too so I'm lucky there. I'll likely be off a minimum of 8 weeks so that's 40 days I'll need and I'm hoping to have 60 saved before then. I get 1.5 days a month.

Hoping to have about $1500 too once it's time.

Why would you need 8 weeks off? I am not trying to sound rude, but you will not need 8 weeks off for this surgery.

I was told at orientation that we were expected to be off a minimum of 4 weeks after surgery. My job puts me at risk every day to be hit, kicked and punched. And I'm required to lift minimum 100 pounds. I'd prefer to be super healed before any of those things occur. I've done some research on here for people in a similar situation and they were all off 6-8 weeks. Guess the surgeon will make that decision.

I have a sedentary desk job but it is high stress with lots of traveling. I took 2 weeks off of vacation time and then worked from home for a week. Lucky for me my pay was not disrupted. Good for you to be so prepared.

Like Leeann, I was only off for two weeks as I operate my own business. I paid staff and my daughter to take care of things while I was away. I could have done with a third week, but was able to work during the day and go to bed when I got home.

I agree, good for you preparing in advance.

My biggest expenses were 2 flights to Toronto (for the meet the team visit and then for actual surgery, 3 weeks apart) and renting a room for a week in Toronto after the surgery. I got a great deal on one flight, but the other was over $600 dollars.

I found an inexpensive room via AIR BNB, but it still added up. Plus I gave gas money to my sister in law for driving me around both visits, and I bought groceries for her for the week she stayed with me in the room.

I bought premier protein, organic boxed soup broth, bottled water, and peppermint tea for myself to have after surgery while in the room. Other expenses were vitamins, restorolax, and senokot.

I also had to buy a chair for the room because they only had one tiny chair and I didn't trust it with my weight. I found a nice big folding outdoor type chair with a cupholder online on kijiji. I gave it to my sister in law and she loves it, lol.

I think all total, including 3 weeks worth of opti, it came to around $2000.00.

Once I got home, my grocery bills were next to nothing as I just drank my premier protein shakes and soup broth. Later on I was able to add Greek yogurt and still later, cottage cheese. I tried cream soups but didn't like them.

Pre-Op Visit: Jan. 10, 2017, weight 304, surgeon: Dr. David Lindsay, St. Joe's, Toronto

1st Day of (3 weeks worth of) Optifast: Jan. 11, 2017

Surgery Date: Feb. 1st, 2017

I saved up $3000 i live in northern Ontario and i had to make sure i had enough money for hotel costs i had surgery on Tuesday and went back home on Sunday my hotel costs came to $777. I dont drive so had to pay someone to take me to Toronto and then come back and get me 6 days later (gas / meals / hotel) I live about 7-8 hours from Toronto and the surgeon requires you to stay in Toronto for a few days post surgery in case of complications. Because i lived so far i stayed an extra few days because small town if something was to happen they wouldnt get me back to Toronto in time. I factored in case i had complications and needed to stay in Toronto even longer then the 6 days. My mom and friend came with me so buying food at grocery store to keep in the hotel room. It all added up between buying protein powder / vitamins etc.. i used up almost all that $3000 i saved up
