Question on Post Op Liquid Stage - SOUPS

Hi all,

Friday I start my Optifast and have my pre op at TWH (nervous and so excited!!) and so I'm trying to get everything prepared for post op including making up some soups for the 2 weeks following surgery in the liquid phase.

Did anyone else find this to be worth while vs buying soups ready made? I know that the goal is about 60g of protein per day so my plan was to do one premade premiere protein (split up into 2 or 3 meals) and some soup with added protein powder. I just thought by making my own soup I could make sure they were as nutritious as possible as apposed to something more processed from the grocery store. Was planning on freezing them in ice cube trays. Thinking along the lines of broccoli, squash, or carrot ginger - obviously well puréed and strained, then frozen and ready to go. Thoughts?

I made a couple of soups to have on hand, and it worked well. My tip is make a small batch! 1/4 cup of soup makes a pot go a loooong way!

also, some people's taste buds change (mine didn't) so I wouldn't go crazy stocking up, just in case.

Good luck!

Yes, I thought the batch size would be important and I might have to 1/2 the recipes to get a few options frozen. That said, I can always make my partner and toddler eat it too! I just feel better if that's all I'm eating to have it be homemade but probably smart not to go crazy. I just thought if I'm feeling tired and weak this would be so easy to just heat up a couple cubes at a time. Thanks for the tips!

Ah.. a fellow prepper.... ok so here's my 2 cents...

I found good organic ( Walmart has them too) soups they are in cartons. You cannot add protein to them before because well you will have to heat them up and it denatures the protein. What I would suggest is you get a few cartons. Open them when you need them --- they store in fridge then heat... wait a few minutes add unflavored protein ... I got NOW ( Nutrition house or Well.ca) it mixes well.

You can also add plain SKYR to tomato soup..Skyr has 22 grams per 3/4 cup so even if you use 1/4 cup that you add to a 1/2 cup ... or so ... you will get 7 plus protein grams.

YAY you ....

I am discovering recipes using the list I was given from TWH..... really cool...

Yes, was planning on only adding protein powder after heating up the soup "ice cubes". I will have bone broth to mix the powder in before adding it to the soup. I do have some organic cartons I like but just wanted to have some homemade food too go with that. I'm trying to minimize packaged foods in my diet as much as possible overall but want to hear what's working for others. Good tip on the yogurt!

Bone broth is perfect.. it has like 9 grams of protein per cup. You add even a tablespoon of protein and you are there....also I am trying to see if I freeze 0 CAL 0 CARB vitamin water into popsicles ....or freezies. I bought some cool gadgets that make things freeze in seconds ....called ZOKU....

I mixed 35g of Revolution Splash Protein powder in grape with, 40g of Precision unflavoured powder and 300ml if cold water then placed them in Popsicles holders. It made 6 popsicles with 10g of protein each and they are yummy!

I made soups as well. processed food of any kind was totally unappealing post op. so I recommend making your own. My surgery was 5 days before thanksgiving. so turkey and veggie leftover soup was amazing. Added a little curry to some to make it curry etc.

I also enjoyed soups from places like soup nutsy afterwards and would eat around any chunks. also would go to a local szechuan place and order a ramen soup (hold the ramen) and it was awesome too!

Amazing tips! Thank you Travelher! I'm not big into processed foods now so assumed that would be the same after surgery. Seems like we're on the same page there. The turkey soup is a great idea!! My mum always makes a huge pot and I'm on puréed food starting the Thanksgiving weekend. Also my sons 3rd Birthday so no cake for me!! But I'll get my mum to take some soup out for me before she adds the noodles. Yum!! I guess you just need to caution against carbs and fats with restaurant soup. That's why I figured I'd get busy in the kitchen before Opti so I can control what's in them. Ramen sounds great too!

I wasn't worried about carbs and fats at that point. in fact potato and bacon soup was a go to in the early days. was only getting in 400 calories a day in 1/4 to 1/2 cup portions so not a worry.
