So i read SOMEWHERE??? where i don't know that some surgeons cut something that makes your appetite non existent. is this true? is it true that some surgeons cut this (i am thinking NERVE??) and some don't ?

does Dr. Urbach do this?

Do i need to ask for it?

if it does exist SHOULD i ask for it?

are these the rantings of a mad woman who has read too much on the subject of Roux en Y surgery and needs to calm her fevered brain?

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday!

I thought that was only removed during the sleeve. I don't think anything is removed in RNY. "Ghrelin is mainly produced by the cells of the gastric fundus, which is removed by sleeve gastrectomy." I'm looking up if there's any changes to this with RNY. I've wondered about this as well. It's definitely one of the reasons the sleeve seemed attractive to me.

I found this, which would lead me to believe that there isn't a change in gherlin post RNY and could contribute to challenges in maintenance long term? Seems like the jury is out on this one! Maybe if you ask nicely they'll take it! Haha wishful thinking. I'm pretty sure they don't take requests.

"Levels of ghrelin are lower in obese versus non-obese individuals, and increased ghrelin secretion has been reported in individuals who have lost weight through conventional dieting, suggesting a possible link between ghrelin and difficulty in maintaining diet-induced weight loss. There is some controversy regarding the role of ghrelin in post-RYGB weight loss; some studies have reported ghrelin reduction following RYGB surgery, but most have found either no significant change or a slight increase in ghrelin secretion in the long term."

Maybe you're thinking of "ghrelin"?! It's the hunger hormone - and yes, RNY is said to supress the ghrelin hormone, therefore abating hunger post-RNY. Because the cut stomach is not removed, technically the hormone is still in the body.

In VSG, the ghrelin is physically cut out.

I've read the effects are the same though - hunger is suppressed and people are satiated with less food with either surgery.

It's the vagus nerve but I've only ever heard one person on the boards talking about it being cut to aid in post-op hunger.

From Wiki: The vagus nerve also plays a role in satiation following food consumption. Knocking out vagal nerve receptors has been shown to cause hyperphagia (greatly increased food intake).
