Do you have a medic alert bracelet? Just wondering if most WLS patients get these.

I considered getting one but was told that the only real medical restrictions is not being able to take NSAIDS and possible risks with intubation. My surgeon told me that if I was incapacitated or having a heart attack or any other medical emergency then these restrictions wouldn't matter. That was just his advice and I followed it and didn't get one. I know some folks did and still do. If you do a search on the menu bar I think you will find a lot of prior posts and maybe find some helpful info there.

Good luck!

I would ask your Dr. My concern would be having an emergency scope extended into the stomach with expecting it to be full size.

Good morning!

I did not get one....

My weight Management Team gave me a card to place in my wallet. It states I had a RNY, date & description of surgery.

I would not worry about anything invasive while you are unconcious. In the event you end up in Emergency, they will ask you about medical history. I recently had an Emergency visit with an episode of kidney stones. That is the first thing that I told the RN in triage. Date of surgery & how many weeks post op.

Everyone who examined me asked me about the 5 incisions & the ER physician knew that it was RNY surgery. The moment you are registered into the ER, they have your entire medical history online.

Here in Ottawa the two major hospitals are connected.

The decision is yours to make in the end...

Take care

Sandra

Hello,

I had Surgery in 2011. Back then there was a lot of conversation surrounding this topic. Through all the reading I've done, I've come to the conclusion that there isn't any good reason to wear one. The very words you place inside this bracelet could end up hindering necessary life saving treatment. In an emergency I want the health care profession to do whatever necessary to save my life.

If administering an NSAID for example in an emergency situation could potentially save your life, would you want to stop this form of medical treatment? I know I wouldn't.

Also the Medic Alert bracelet draw unnecessary attention to yourself. If you are a private person who would like to keep your information about this surgery private, the bracelet draws attention to yourself, its like a flashing bright billboard on your wrist.... and lets face it, people are curious by nature.

Anyway this is just my take on it. If you do decide that you want to wear one after all, I would simply state what surgery you had and give no medical instruction. RNY is all the information any ER staff would need (in my opinion)

I wear one. There are lots of nice ones out there that don't draw attention to it. I took off the no sugar. Have no blind ngt and reactive hypoglycemia plus my allergies. Since 2 yr post op have problems with reactive hypoglycemia and sugar can save my life
