Kidney Stones
Hello everyone !
Just a quick update. I posted a few days ago!
I had a (2) week history of what began as a bladder infection. Quite honestly it has been difficult. Struggling with pain and discomfort...
Last night it progressed into horrific and unimaginable pain. Crazy back, pelvic & groin pain.
I went into Emergency. The entire experience was horrific. I ended up spending 5 hours begging for them to help me. I've had back to back surgeries in November and RNY in January. I was able to cope with Plain Tylenol. The CT of my abdomen found a kidney stone that had entered the ureter. After 5 litres of IV Fluids & a whack of Dilaudid & Zofran I finally passed the stone into my bladder.
What I found most interesting is that the Emergency room nurse said this is common for post RNY patients.
I have three children & this was worse then childbirth...
My question is why & what can I do to prevent it from happening again?
RNY classes did not prepare me for this !

IN THE END WE ONLY REGRET CHANCES WE DIDN'T TAKE.
Sorry that you went through this. It must have been frightening. I have never heard of a higher incidence of kidney stones in RNY post-ops. I had heard of gallbladder stones. You will probably follow the same advice for non-RNY people to prevent kidney stones, if there is such a thing as prevention for them. Sandra, take some days to rest, your body has been through a lot. Perhaps that's why they thought that the antibiotics weren't working because the pain didn't go away. Possibly it was the kidney stone all along.

Out of experience you must drink lots lots of water and keep away from salt.
Take care

My experiences are pre op but I've had kidney stones twice and the pain is like no other. At least the second time I was on top of it sooner and got help asap knowing how bad the pain could get. Eager to avoid a third episode I asked what I could do to avoid it and basically the answer the doctor gave me was that you can do a few things (dietary changes, increase water intake etc.) to help your system but ultimately some people are just more prone to making them than others.

Found this online from the Mayo Clinic that mentions intestinal bypass increasing ones risk of kidney stones.

Also, having a high protein diet reduces the level of citrate which is found in the urine that helps prevent stones from forming.
Like others have said, drink lots of water.
