Length of intestine bypassed

Hi all,

Has anyone been told the length of intestines that will be bypassed? I have read elsewhere that if I person is BMI 50+ they will bypass 50% of intestines for more malabsorption. For people with 40 BMI is is more like 20%.

Has anyone been told anything about this variance or what the doctor will do for them?

I am curious because I am a BMI of 38 right now after losing 12 pounds. They have also asked me to do 3 weeks of shakes prior to surgery. I guess I am starting to get nervous that the surgeon may bypass less the more I lose prior to surgery.

Thoughts?

I was never told, nor is it in my OR Notes. Whatever they did is working ;)

I asked my surgeon and was told a little more than a meter. I have no idea if that was a standard length or specific to each person although my impression was that it was his standard.

There is no "standard" length that is bypassed. Each surgeon uses their own judgment and their own methods.

Your surgeon can let you know what their procedure is.

By and large they will do proximal length.
