Travel restrictions post RNY?

Hi, I am about 3 weeks away from surgery at Guelph General Hospital. I got mixed messages about travel restrictions from the nurse and surgeon. The nurse said 3 months of no travel. The surgeon was surprised by that and just said to stick to destinations within North America where I could access a doctor in case of complications. Did anyone else get some guidance on travel. I travel for work usually just Canada and US.

I don't have any recommendations health-wise, but you will want to double check that your travel insurance will cover you after surgery. Some have a waiting period depending on your plan. It's just something to think about.

Until I had been stable with no complications for 3 months post surgery, I could not get travel insurance coverage to the US at any price. Had to cancel my vacation, which would have been 6 weeks post surgery. Even with a letter from my surgeon, no insurance would cover me. Definitely not worth the risk of going to the US without insurance IMHO.

Interesting. I went to the states 2 months post op. I called to see what changes I would need to make to our policy, and they said the surgery would be considered a pre existing condition, and wouldn't be covered if any complications arose from it while in the states.

But that I was still covered under my policy for unrelated events. (I gave him a bunch of crazy scenarios that were unrelated to surgery but require specialized care because of my surgery, and he said they would be covered)

this is a good reminder to double check that again as our policy is up for renewal soon...

Also, some people don't have preexisting coverage or need extra to supplement when traveling. It can be nearly impossible to find this if you have had recent issues.

I'm heading to SC next month which is 3 months almost exactly post surgery. I guess I better read my policy. :) Other than that I don't know the answer.
