Is Skim Milk Powder even Worth it?

Good morning!

I was told (at my one month post op appt) to add skim milk powder to my soups, etc., to up the protein content. So I bought some, but don't know whether or not it's even worth it.

One serving size is 4 tbsp, and has 13 g of sugar, 9 g of protein, 13 g of carbs, and 90 calories. I was told to add 1 tbsp of powder to cream soups, etc. So 1 tbsp of powder has 3.25 g of sugar, 2.25 g of protein, 3.25 carbs, and 22.5 calories.

I don't know if 2.25 grams of protein is worth the extra sugar, carbs, and calories. I know the numbers are low but it's only 2.25 grams of protein.

Does anyone use it?

Thanks,

Kathy

If you aren't reaching your protein goals with other foods then yes I would add it. If you are I wouldn't bother with it. It meets the 1:10 ratio.....1 gram of protein for 10 calories. At this early out the calories are minimal and the protein is most important.

Hi Kathy,

I don't use it. I bought some unsweetened, unflavoured protein powder from Canadian Protein. It's 120 calories per scoop, but only 1 carb and 27g of protein.

I'm really turned off with the protein shakes and have been struggling. I haven't tried this in soup yet, but I have put it in my milk for cereal in the morning, and it wasn't so bad.

Oh, I have a sample pack of that and I completely forgot! Thanks for reminding me.

I'm so limited in what I can eat now, having to go back on full liquids, that I'd really like to have my cream soups and up the protein in them. Maybe the unflavored protein powder will help.

I find yogurt is a great way to add protein - Greek and Skyr specifically. Plus the unflavoured protein powder mixes really well with yogurt.

I've been heating up V8 and put a dollop of skyr yogurt...it's like eating chilli with sour cream (well it reminds me of chilli with sour cream) i also boiled broccoli in vegetable broth put the skyr yogurt and blended in a bullet it makes a lovely cream of broccoli soup. you have to use skyr it's much higher in protein and has a very mild taste so it makes a nice cream of anything soup.

I'm wondering the same thing. I bought some of the bulk barn yesterday. Granted the serving size is based on 100 grams, but based on that serving (I realize i'm only going to use a tbsp) it has 52 grams of sugar in it. I don't know how much a tbsp would weigh gram rise, and then trying to figure out how much sugar is in it per serving of tbsp, and 36 grams of protein per the 100 gram serving. Me trying to figure out what it is for the tbsp serving is going to be so much fun. I hate math lol.

I am going to be on full fluids for three weeks, so its probably worth puting something to incrase my protein... I only bought a little bit at the bulk barn incase I ended up hating it. ANyone else use this or have any other ideas?

1 tbsp is 15 grams. I think you would be better to get the unflavoured whey protein isolate that they also sell at bulk barn.

You are confusing things. 1 tbsp is actually 15 ml not grams and in that 1 tbsp of the bulk barn unflavoured is 5.2 grams of protein. You have to weigh the 1 tbsp when you buy it then do the math from there. It's been done by many of us on here in the past.
