Question about sipping

Hi forum!

I'm heading in to my last night in hospital then hopefully discharged tomorrow.

I have a question about sipping.... I am taking smaller sips than pre-surgery, but I find I can easily sip 15-20ml without pain in one go.

Should I take it easier or is it a personal tolerance thing?

I would go with tolerance. If you feel good then continue but do not gulp.  At first they had me sipping 3 30ml cups every hour. Hydration is very important.  Maybe if you take a large mouthful by mistake, drink a little, swish the rest then fini**** wait a bit, repeat and walk.

I'm only 4 months out, but I think follow directions at first. If you still think u can tolerate more, then do a BIT more.  I find it depends on the liquid.  Warm liquid is good, cold not so much.

Can you ask your nurse or surgeon while you're still in hospital? That would be your best bet.

I felt thirsty like crazy at first and wanted to drink more, but took it slow.  They gave me these little 30 ml medicine cups and a big glass of ice water and I loved the water cold, but hated it when it became room temp.

They told me my new pouch was the size of the 30 ml cup and to not drink more than one tiny medicine cup full without waiting at least 10-15 minutes, so that's what I did.  I used Biotene dry mouth spray to help with the super dry mouth, and also swished the water around a lot before I swallowed.

Different centers are different though, so I'd ask.

Good luck!

Good morning!

I have to agree with the majority here!

Pouch is the size of a egg more or less.

I would recommend going slow and drink 30 ml within a 20 minute period.  (3) medicine cups every hour.  As time passes you will increase. It takes time.  My water had to be cold. I kept a glass of ice chips near by and sucks on them in between sips.

I was very thirsty and found the sipping comforting!

Good luck & keep in touch
