2 Weeks Post Op

Good morning!

I am 2 weeks post-op RNY today!  So hard to believe it's been 2 weeks since my surgery already!

I lost 6 Ibs in the past week, plus 9.8 Ibs my first week, so I'm down 15.8 Ibs since surgery.  I lost 23 Ibs on Optifast, so I'm down 38.8 Ibs total.  That boggles my mind, lol.  I'm so happy with the results.

My pain was much better over the past 3 or 4 days but yesterday I dropped a pill and stupidly bent over to pick it up without thinking, and I think that was too much strain on my incisions so the pain is back.  Not as awful as it was at first, but bad enough to interfere with my sleep. I'll be thrilled when the pain is gone for good.

Did anyone else have back pain after surgery?  My back and left side ache consistently.  I have never had back problems so assumed it was from the hard operating table, or the hospital bed, but now that I'm up and about it still hurts.  Only lying perfectly flat with no pillows relieves it.

I see my family doctor tomorrow for my 2 week follow up so I'll ask him about it. Maybe I'm just holding my body stiffly or differently to compensate for the pain in that one incision and it's throwing my back out.

I had some cottage cheese this week and it tasted awesome, especially after so many weeks of just liquids.  I'm so glad, as they tried me on cottage cheese the day after surgery and I couldn't eat it.  It's my new favorite food, lol.

Tomorrow I get to start the puree diet and I am so looking forward to trying the refried beans, and the ricotta bake. Does anyone have any recommendations for this stage?

It took me almost 2 hours to eat half an espresso cup (about 20-30 ml) of cottage cheese yesterday.  I was worried that I am not eating as much or as quickly as some other people who've had surgery after me, but thanks to everyone *****assured me that we're all different and can tolerate different things at different times. I am getting my recommended minimum amounts of protein and water, so that's good.

Even with all of the pain, I don't regret this, and feel so blessed to have been given this amazing new tool.

Hi there.

I am 3 weeks post op and have ran into similar things as you. My back did hurt starting on day 4 maybe and lasted about a week. I think it was just because I was adjusting my body so that my stomach was comfortable when I sat/slept etc. AND.....I also stretched or did something to my left incision that is still sensitive. I was feeling so good last Friday that I think I did a bit too much around the house. Saturday,  I was in a lot of pain with that incision. I literally cried getting into bed. On Sunday, it was gone thank goodness. So, I am taking it easy now. Not doing much bending at all. It will be so nice once this left incision is completely healed. I can't wait to be able to sleep on that side.

Sounds like you are doing great. Thank goodness we have this forum so we can all communicate!!

Wow, we are going through similar things.  Where did you have your surgery?  Mine was at St. Joe's in Toronto.

I'm sorry you pulled something too; so glad your pain is gone now.  I agree totally; it will be nice when that left incision is healed. I'm a side sleeper too and it's been difficult to sleep on my back.

It would help if I wasn't such a klutz.  I drop everything, lol.  I should have just left the pill on the floor and grabbed a new one, but I bent over without even thinking. I won't be doing that again.

This may be TMI, but if you get constipated, does your stomach hurt badly?  I guess things are still swollen inside.  My doctor told me to pick up some senekot and I"ve been taking it every day since I was discharged but it doesn't seem to be enough.

This forum is great!  So glad i found it.

Take care.

Good morning,

My surgery was at HRH.

Hard to say about pain when constipated. The one time I was really constipated was also the time I had stretched my incision so I really don't know if that was the pain or not but I would guess no,. At HRH, they recommend Milk of Magnesia for constipation. This was part of the documentation they give you when you leave with your pain med prescription etc. I have used it twice and it worked both times.

Good luck!

I hated cottage cheese before surgery but it was my best friend during liquid stage because you could actually chew something. Haven't eaten it since though. I loved chilli in purée stage and still do. A great go to when on road and you need food I grab one at Wendy's and add hot sauce. You are doing great. Keep it up!

Thanks, and thanks also for reminding me about the Wendy's chilli!  My friend Nancy suggested it but I had forgotten. I think I"ll pick some up tomorrow and bring it home with me to puree.

Hi Kathy,

You are doing great, really you are!

My back has also been acting up a lot these last few days.  I can't seem to find a position where it does not tighten up.  Even with a heating pad, It relaxes but then tightens up again as soon as I'm up and about.   I need to get back into the gym.  "first time I may have said this, ever"

I find walking helps my back and to loosen things up.   I don't recall who mentioned the Milk of Magnesia, but I took some without any problem.  I was wonderful when it engaged.  LOL     It is also recommended by the WLC here in Ottawa.

As for Cottage Cheese, have you tried Nordica Smooth Cottage cheese?  OMG is it delicious and it's the perfect texture for pureed stage. it comes in Vanilla, Lemon and Salted Caramel, yum.  each has 10g Protein.   I found it here in Ottawa at Freshco. check expiry dates!!

Hoping your next day always feels better than the last!!

Wayne
