Goal weight - who decides and how?

My first post!

I'm in the process for surgery. I've had a doctor's appointment and just waiting for the first dietitian visit. I'm wondering how you determine your goal weight. Is it something you decided? Your surgeon? And what is it based on?

Thanks for humouring this newbie. :)

This is still something I'm not clear on lol. I was told that they would consider it a success if I lost 100 pounds in one year - 18 months. With that being said there is a post op planner that gives you guidelines. Go to the drop down menu at the top "more" then "resources" then "post op planner". It asks you for your weight and percentage to lose and gives a guideline of 65% loss. This will show you what you "could" lose and breaks down your loss by month.

Hope this helps :) Good luck on your journey!

At my dietician appointment at TWH, I was told that ultimately I decide my own goal, but they would help to guide me to a reasonable and realistic goal weight.

I decided what I wanted to achieve. I was sick a year after and went even lower. This was good because there is often a bounce back of weight. Decide where you want to be and go a little lower.

12 years ago when I had surgery they picked the mid-point of a normal BMI as the goal so that was BMI of 22.5.   For many that isn't realistic but that was the number the clinics used.

When Dr Mamazza asked me my goal, I said 250lbs,    He leaned over, tapped me on the arm and said we'll do better than that.   So if I hit 250 I'm happy but realistically I think 230 is achievable after what the DR said.  That represents 174lb reduction.  Can I see 190's?  I don't know.

I have already lost 36 lbs total just by diet change, including the 14lbs in just one week on Opti.  WOW
