Need help...pre-op and gained 10 pounds
I don't know what is going on but I have gained 10 pounds since I started this journey. I have only one appt left in January and am worried it will set me back. I honestly don't know how this happened, I am moving more, watching what I eat (the odd slip up I am not perfect), eating slower, chewing 20 times, I drink at least 3 litres of water a day. I have given up all carbonation and caffine.
Please help if you have any ideas.
Thank you in advance.

I started logging way back when but stopped because I had carpal tunnel surgery, and never got back into the habbit. I guess it is time to start again.

Good morning and Happy New Year!
I posted what I did to prepare for WLS a while ago for another member. I thought that I would post it for you.
First of all... breathe... This is a new day and a new year. Put everything behind and start fresh.
I would not worry about them cancelling anything. I do know here in Ottawa that if you have not made the nutritional changes moving forward, the dietician will make suggestions and ask you to come back for follow up.
Congratulations on putting yourself first.
I wanted to be prepared and begin eliminating everything that you cannot have. So stop everything carbonated, caffienated, alcohol, junk food, fast food and I gave up most carbs. Drink at least 2-3 litres of water daily.
Portion control is key. Making good food choices.
I guess I really wanted to continue normal food because I knew that there would be a mass change in choices post RNY.
Quite honestly... I had not given up everything...
Still enjoyed my bagels with cream cheese.
I was never a pasta lover and I am Italian! I know crazy!
I am really going to miss a nice juicy burger
I love oriental or anything Asian it's my go to!
My last dinner before Optifast was Asian. So yummy!
My love for General Tao's Chicken & Love for rice will most certainly gonna break my heart post RNY.
Not a big alcohol drinker. That was easy!
My RNY is January 4th
I am currently Day 20 of Optifast- That has been hard. 4 shakes 4 times a day was very difficult. It was not about the taste. It is winter and I got tired of drinking cold beverages. I compensated with warm teas and coffees in between.
I have been trying to eat without drinking for 30 minutes.
That is my biggest challenge.
I am a bit worried about the sip sip sip of water or any liquids post RNY.
Still not sure how big a swallow it should be post RNY.
Everyone here will tell you to track everything either on paper or Lose it or My Fitness Pal
Take a picture of your self now in a door way and continue to do so during your journey.
If you can... Come back here daily. The gang here are amazing, informative and supportive!
My RNY is January 4th...
Good luck
Sandra

First of all best of luck on Wednesday!
I think the tracking might be a contributor. I was tracking then stopped. That is goal one starting now, start tracking again.
I too am worried about the water, I drink a lot now and enjoy it, but I gulp, no such thing as sipping. I guess I will learn.
2017 is the year I am putting myself first. This is my year!
Again, thank you for taking the time to respond.

Not gonna lie, the drinking water thing sucks! I always gulped my water. That was hard to get used to and have to admit I didn't try to sip until after surgery. I enjoyed my water until the very last day. But the silver lining is, it gets better. I'm almost 6 months since my surgery and I still can't gulp my water, I can drink normally. I don't miss gulping anymore. But love that I can drink more than a medicine cup full.
Hi Sandra,
Wow, day 20 of Opti already, and surgery in 2 days time! Woohoo, you're almost on the losers bench! So happy for you!
I was jus****ching some Youtube videos yesterday and today and someone showed how big of a sip she was able to do the day after surgery. I wish I could remember which Youtuber did that so I could tell you but I've been binge watching so many different people that I have no idea now who it was. It was a pretty tiny, wet your whistle type of sip. Something like you might see on a TV show about Victorian ladies sipping tea oh so politely, lol. We'll have to remember to stick our pinkies out as we sip, lol. I start Opti in 9 days! I can't believe it's almost time to get this ball rolling! Can't wait!
I love your advice of taking a photo in a doorway; I'll have to try that!
Take care,
Kathy

My orientation was this past April and it wasn't until July that I got serious about making the changes I needed to be successful. I wasn't given anything in the way of a pre op diet except "try your best until Optifast". Not too helpful. So when I started reading these forums and seeing what the people who have had long term success were doing I decided to try to stick to a "maintenance" type diet to see if I felt like it was going to be doable for me in the long term. From July until the start of Optifast I logged my food in 'Lose it' everyday, focused on protein, eliminated bread, pasta and rice etc., and limited my calories to 1200 or less. I also increased my water intake, which resulted in an annoying number of trips to the bathroom everyday, and got my butt moving, which admittedly is easier during the warmer months. This whole process is a struggle but life can be that way, WLS or not. You can't change the past so don't beat yourself up for it. The biggest piece of this puzzle is what you put in your mouth, start there and I bet you'll see the changes you want.

thank you FozzieBear for responding.
I love carbs, I eat a lot of them but I thought I was doing good by only eating whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta and brown rice. I guess that is just a start. So the key is eliminating them all together. I managed to divorce a husband and survive I guess I can divorce carbs and get through it!
