Returning to work after surgery

Hello all

I am preparing for RNY surgery on November 14 and was wondering how long it took people to return to work. My job is quite sedentary but I have a long commute (over an hour by train + car each way). I was told to allow 2 weeks before trying to physically go back to the office. Does that sound about right? Was anyone able to work from home during the recovery period?

Thanks very much in advance for your thoughts!

I took six weeks off, because I was allowed and paid.  I could have gone back to work in two for sure, I was getting pretty bored, but I figured I'd be bored at work so I might as well just stay home, at least there I could get things done.

I was back to work after 2 weeks ... I have an office job and only drive about 20 minutes one way. I was tired the first couple of days but my energy started to return after a few days. Good luck on your surgery. Cathy

Hey helferships!

I am the same as the above, I have an office job and went back after two weeks. Slow and steady and all will be well.

Cheers,

Skotti

Everyone is different, I'd say two weeks should be ok, but if you're entitled to more, I'd take it. Only because I took the bus to meet up with my husband about one week post op, and the jerking and stop and go of the trip, whipped me out! It was like I'd tried to jog! But I was fine in a car. But if the train is smooth, might not be an issue.

i had a six week lifting restriction on anything over 10lbs. Something else to consider too.

I took four weeks of paid leave.

Two weeks is plenty of time.  I have felt worse after dental work than I did after surgery and was back at work after six days.

OK, so people are probably going to say I'm crazy. And a workaholic (true).

I have an office job. I had surgery on a Fri, took Monday off and started working from home on the Tues. Worked at home for one full week after that, and just spent 4 days on a business trip during week #2. Not far - just an hour or two away by plane - the hardest part was finding time to go find food that was good to eat but I brought protein shakes with me too.

If you heal fast, I'd say you could EASILY work from home after 1 week if you wanted. Just depends on your body etc!

I also have an office job and do the 1 hour commute by train. I had surgery Oct 4th and returned to work on the 24th. The 1st week I was rather tired and overwhelmed specially trying to figure in carrying breakfast, 2 snacks and lunch. My 2nd week was much better and much less overwhelming.
