Protein Shakes/powder and Costco

Hi again, yes another post from me.

When I was at my nutrition class this week, I asked the nutritionist about using meal replacements like ensure or boost, as something I could use for breakfest. I've never been a breakfast eater, so I thought something simple like that would get me off to a good start in getting something in for breakfest, until I get use to it, and started eating actual food.

She did say that would be fine, however she recommeneded instead a protein shake would be better as she said its better nutritionally over meal replacements and something I'll be using post op as well. She and also some people at the class mentioned premier shakes at costco are a good choice. I have heard of them mentioned before on this forum.

Also, Costco came up a few times by other people in the crowd claiming getting your vitamins, protein, are way cheaper there then anywhere else.

So my questions are.

Do any of you find Costco truly cheaper in buying all your vitamins, etc? Is it worth joining? I'm considering it.

Secondly, any advice, on a good protein powder? I'm not 100 percent sure of getting the premade shakes or getting powder to make my own. I know I've read on this form that your suppose to look for certain things in the protein regarding nutritional content, I'm not sure what exactly we are to look for in the powder (carbs, sugar, protein, etc) so any help in that would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi!

Well, I use the Premier Protein Drinks  (RTD - ready to drink) from Costco.  I never got into using protein powder so I can't offer an opinion on those.  The RTD shakes are so convenient ..... grab and go without having to get the blender or bullet out whatever (another step that might make you not want to bother having anything).

As for Vitamins I do also get mine from there, and I do find them cheaper.  If you would use a Costco membership for other things it may be worth your while for a membership, but I don't think I would get one just for the vitamins.

Keep asking questions! Knowledge is power!

Hi Manda32!

For me, I use the Kaizen(Decadent Chocolate) powder from Costco. It is a little bit more money, but it is pure and not a blend. Blends aren't quite the equivalent to the pure. Plus, it is 30 grams of Protein per portion. It blends smooth, and I have never encountered a problem with lumps. I use a shake bottle most of the time, and again, no lumps.

I prefer the powder over the RTD, because of cost. It only takes a couple of seconds to make a shake.

Good luck.

Cheers,

Skotti

I love Premier Protein shakes and have a chocolate one for breakfast every morning. I also cannot stomach food in the morning, especially since I've been on Saxenda, so it's been a great solution for me.

I do not have a membership to Costco but I get friends to buy my vitamins and my iron pills there because of the savings. My iron pills are under 4 dollars there and at a regular drug store 10 dollars or more. right there is a huge savings.

When you are reading the label look for high protein, and a lower sugar. i buy LeanFit Whey from there and it has 25 grams of protein, sugar 1g and Carb 2g calories 120.     i use to buy the premade shakes but got tired of the prices going up and a few times i found that they had clumps in them and it turned me off of them

If you're new to protein powders, I like www.canadianprotein.com. You can buy sample packs- 1 serving - of any of their powders and flavours for $1.99. It's better than getting stuck with a whole container of protein you hate. ?

For me ,Costco is great. I use premier shakes. Get my vitamins there . Also cottage cheese , Greek plain yogurt, baby bel cheese rounds, laughing cow and other things that are staples in my new gidgibelly world less expensively . For a powdered protein (unflavored) I go to GNC pro performance whey iso burst all natural. 40 grams protein in a serving but if your adding it to foods your eating you get half that. It's mixed great in both hot and cold and I really can't taste it. My Nut. Suggested that. It also lasts a long time when your using it to add to food .

Thanks for the advice and input. I ended up getting a membership. I use to be a member eons ago. Be nice to take advantage of other good deals there too.

Bought the chocolate premier ready made shakes. They didn't have vanilla which I would have preferred, but its a starting point. At least it didn't cost the 42.99 I saw online for the shakes they were 10 dollars less in store. Here's hoping I like the taste, I really need to put effort into getting breakfast in.

Agains thanks to all *****sponded.

The shakes go on sale from time to time so keep your eyes open for them.  In Canada Chocolate and Vanilla are the only flavours we can get but in the US they have more.  I use both powder and PP.  I like them both.  I add Banana to my chocolate powder in my bullet at breakfast and it is pretty good.  Vitamins are cheaper there as well.
