BMI

Hi Everyone,

I'm just wondering when is the "determination" of whether you qualify for surgery?  Is it in the beginning of the process or the meeting with the surgeon prior to getting surgery scheduled?  The reason i'm asking is that my BMI is exactly 40 and I really don't have any co-morbidities...so i'm wondering is it the weight at orientation that "qualifies" or is it one later...

Thanks everyone!

this is going to sound bad, but if you havnt had your first weigh in at the clinic and your bmi is 40 on the dot.... do not loose weight before they weigh you. my bmi was 39.8 I was going to be denied but since I have a neurological disorder they aren't worried about that. I also know someone else whose bmi was 39.6 and they were denied.

referred mid Jan, info session feb 29th, nurse April 25th, nut class may 3rd, Doctor may 10th, social worker may 12th, dietician & sw July 11th, Doctor July 19, surgical education class August 22, meet the surgeon August 31, surgery September 22/16

they don't weigh you at the info session it's the one after that, I know it's sounds awful, but my bmi was a difference of 3 pounds to be 40 and they were considering denying me before I told them of my medical issue. but I would hate for you to be denied then have to be referred again. over as little difference as 3 pounds.

that's exactly what I was thinking...so I guess I'm holding at this weight till the orientation...but can I stop worrying about being denied (based on weight) after orientation?

you won't be denied after they weigh you that is what they go by.

Thanks for the info!!  I appreciate it!  Are you at TWH?  That's where I've been referred to...

You don't get weighed until you see the Nurse - which for me was my 3rd appt after orientation - I'm at TWH as well.
