Eating and drinking

I am 8 days out from surgery and am wondering at what point do you start avoiding drinking for 30 minutes before and after eating?  Today is my first day of full fluids.

If you're still on fluids, then, by all means, continue drinking...  Once you move on to something that won't move straight thru your pouch (like pureed), then the rule comes into play.  You don't want to push any food out of your pouch.

Oh...if you're eating stuff like yogurt with slightly thicker consistency, I would respect the rule as well!  It will still slide thru your pouch more quickly, but you don't want to pu**** down too fast.

If you've had RNY, then you no longer have a pyloric valve which moves the flow of food out of your stomach. We shouldn't drink as we eat, because it will force the food down and out sooner, which makes you hungrier faster - but in my experience it also causes severe cramping and discomfort until it all comes back out again. Which is not pleasant, lol.

I agree with the others. Once you move on to purees I would start to follow that rule. I was able to have tiny sips with my meals but since my revision in September any liquids with my meals causes intense cramping. I avoid liquids for 30 minutes or longer if I can.

Thanks ladies for the replies!  Does it matter if I've had the sleeve?

As far as I know.. the sleeve retains your pyloric valve, and as such, not as crucial.. but I would double check with your clinic.

I believe even with the sleeve you want to keep your dense protein and food in your new smaller stomach as long as possible so that you feel full longer and not pushing your food right threw and being hungry soon after.

I agree with the others, once you start puree you want to start timing your drinking before and after your meals.  30 minuts before a meal and at least 30-60 minutes after a meal

watch the following youtube video it will explain why we do not want to drink with our meals
