Hi everyone,

So as I am mentally preparing to start Opti on Monday of next week, I have read that some places allow you to have cucumbers and broccoli? Is this true? and how do I know if it is okay where I am having surgery, which is Toronto East by the way.

Thanks for you help.

If you have sheets about the opti phase then it would be marked in there.  Only some centres allow the veggies but forget which ones.  You could contact your dietitian and ask her.

I am allowed broccoli and cucumber but that is my surgeons rules, I agree that you should call and see if you are allowed or not before you do.  I had a sheet that said what I was allowed along with my Opti, it wasn't really a defined sheet so read all your paperwork carefully.  As for the allowance, I can have max. Of 2 cups of lettuce, celery, cucumber, green pepper and broccoli, so you just add what you want until you reach your two cup limit.  No dressings, just lemon juice and vinegar.

I'm starting my third week of opti, my surgery is December 2nd at St Joes in Hamilton. I'm allowed a total of 2 cups a day of broccoli cauliflower celery green peppers cabbage lettuce and cucumber with 15 ml of fat free dressing. I would check with your dietitian. Good luck

Hi patti I went through TWH and had my surgery at Toronto East General.  This was back in February and things may have changed but when I went on Opti we were only allowed 1 cup of broth a day provided it was less than 10 calories per serving, and black coffee and tea, as well as sugar free jello.  Some Centres (I think Hamilton) allow for 2 cups of veggies a day but not TWH as far as I know.  But once you get a call back do update us and let us know as again, it may have changed.

I will for sure update you, strange though how it varies from center to center.

Patti

I was at the surgical orientation today and it is a NO for us as far as vegetables.  We can have 20 calories a day in addition to the Opti. Broth, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles, decaf black coffee, tea, water.

Not sure why there are differences but for us going to TEGH thats the story.
