New to this, seeking insight
Hi everyone!! I am new here and was wondering if I could get some questions answered. I have been to HRRH for the group orientation and have met with the surgeon. I go on Nov 17 for the trio of appointments, nurse, dietitian and social worker. What can I expect for those appointments? I was also wondering about smoking. I am currently trying to quit using the patch, but it is hard and I have had many "slip ups" . Will using the patch delay my surgery? The Dr told me I was looking at Jan or Feb for a surgery date. I have had one round of blood tests done, like 12 viles taken! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!
At TWH they said you had to stop smoking 3 months before your first appointment (not orientation, orientation is where they tell you this). That means you are guaranteed to be smoke-free for 6 months prior to surgery. They said if you smoke now, not a big deal, they will just push your appointments back. But they do random nicotine tests and if you test positive twice you're kicked out of the program. I would ask for something like Chantix. Even with the nicotine patch, you're going to test + for nicotine. So, you will need to discuss that with them.
As for the other things...
nurse goes over your medical history in detail
dietician talks to you about how your diet will change and will try to judge whether or not you can make those changes
social worker looks to see if you understand what surgery is, do you have a support system in place, are you able to handle this financially (ie, get time off work, pay for vitamins)
I had a lot of anxiety going in to these appointments because I hate talking about myself, especially impromptu discussions. But knowing a little bit about what to expect made me feel better. Hope this helps!
