You can go to any doctor for a referral - even a walk in clinic.

How did you find a nurse practitioner?  I have another appointment with my Dr on Thursday. I have written everything out to help plead my case, lol!

If you live in Toronto I can refer you to the clinic that did my referral.  Let me know.

Thanks, but I live north of Barrie.  He says I don't have enough to lose for gastric bypass surgery....but when I look at the web site...I fall under the "stats".  I have to lose a hundred pounds and my bmi is just over 40.  am I being realistic or delusional????  I figure I will ask him to just please refer me, and then when I see the "experts", if they feel I am not a candidate then obviously they won't approve me.  Thoughts on this??

If you meet the criteria then it's just his job to send in the referral and it's up to the bariatric centre to decide if you are a suitable candidate or not.  Rules are BMI of 35 plus 2 co-morbidities or BMI of 40+.

Yea...it's not your GP's job to say yea or nay for the programme.  It's up to the bariatric clinic team so as many others have said here, either insist you are refered or find someone that will do it.  I would also be looking for a new GP - sounds like this one is stuck back in the last century
