WWYD...Reversal vs Loss of Stomach?.

Just looking for some thoughts on this?...

I had a revision of my RNY 2 months ago due to severe bleeding ulcers. I had 911 calls, ambulance rides, blood transfusions...the works!

Unfortunately it looks like I may be ulcer filled again!... Will know for sure in another week after my endoscopy...but all the symptoms are there again!

Ive already had 30% of my pouch removed so they cannot revise again. I basically have 2 options...

  1. Complete reversal of the surgery
  2. Remove my pouch all together and connect my esophagus directly to my intestines.

Neither option is good! Reversing will likely cause me to regain weight, and removing my pouch....well I have to wonder what my quality of life would be like???

How can I possibly decide? Anyone have any thoughts on this? What would you do? I couldn't bear to regain this weight. My starting weight was 330...current 159....I'm living life again! I cannot go back! ....it's like an impossible decision.....

That really is an impossible decision and I'm sorry. I don't know what I would do in your situation. I don't recall which centre you're through (sorry again) but I'm curious as to which surgeon is providing this choice ie. a bariatric surgeon or a gastro? Have you considered a second opinion? A second, not to undermine the surgeon suggesting this, but simply for another set of eyes (on your guts) and to see if they have a possible different option. Also I would want to know the exact risks and quality of life, as much as a medial professional can estimate this, with removal of the pouch and connection from the esophagus to the intestine.

Warm thoughts your way and I hope this is resolved for you very soon.

I am so sorry to hear this. I wish I had advice to give. I hope you're able to come to a decision that resolve the ongoing issues you've been facing.

I have to ask, do they have any ideas why you are experiencing ulcers to this degree?

So sorry this is still happening to you. Hoped when you had the revision it was all behind you.  I agree with Karen and think you need a second opinion you need to know all your options. Positive thoughts for you while you sort this out.

I am sorry to hear that you are still suffering and going through all of this.  It is a hard decision to make but you have to ask yourself -what is best for your health and your quality of life?  Being skinny and too sick to do anything or maybe gaining some weight back but at least being able to live life and enjoy things.  Even though you lose the "small" stomach I think we are pretty trained at how to eat and what to eat/not eat.  I still weigh myself every day to make sure I am staying on track and at goal.  This is a lifelong journey and even though our stomachs are smaller it doesn't mean we can't gain the weight back as many people have proven so we have to stay diligent no matter what.  Just some food for thought....

I would post your question on the main forum as we are a smaller group so you might find answers out there and advice.

I wish you only best and I hope you are able to get things resolved but in a healthy way!

Take care

Monica

I'm really sorry to hear that you are experiencing problems once again and are now faced with such a difficult decision.

I found this article that you may find helpful.

I would tend to agree with Karen in that you may want to seek a second opinion.  Regardless, I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide to do and wish you a speedy recovery afterward.

I know Theo Grantcharov at St. Mike's in Toronto does revisions. If this is not your surgeon - you might want to consider him for a 2nd opinion. http://www.stmichaelshospital.com/research/profile.php?id=gr antcharov

Very hard choice to make - hopefully something else can be done. Fingers crossed.

So sorry to hear you are still having problems with the ulcers, that really sucks.  If they remove the pouch entirely how will that work with regard to feeling hungry or full?  Would you not feel either? Is it possible to reconnect the old stomach and give you a gastric sleeve?  Or is that too risky at this point?  I would ask a ton of questions and make a pros and cons list, get a second opinion as suggested.  Its a tough decision so the more info the better imo.
