Undergoing evaluation for surgery
And really finding these posts helpful. As I go through the evaluation process and decide whether or not to have the surgery, it really helps to hear other people's experiences.
Question, for those of you who've had your surgery already, which procedure did the surgeon suggest for you? I know the gastric bypass is the most common surgery performed in Ontario, but all the reading I've done suggests that the gastric sleeve is safer and has less complications, even though weight loss may occur at a slightly slower rate.
Hi Betty, unless you have a medical reason such as arthritis or chron's disease or some other condition where you need to take NSAIDs then the surgery that will be performed is the roux-en-y. It is the "gold standard" and the gastric sleeve is only done where the roux-en-y would be contraindicated. I had the roux-en-y back in February (6th) and I have lost 100 pounds so far. It is the best thing I have ever done. I am 40 and wish I had done it 10 years ago.
I have been told that when I get my surgery in December it will be the sleeve, due to a very high BMI (63-64) They said after 6 weeks of Opti, I may end up with the RNY, but as of now it is the sleeve for safety reasons. But the surgeon also said if I get the sleeve we will reevaluate where I am weight wise in 12-18 months, and they may then at that time do the RNY.
Andrea,
Surgery Date: Dec. 16th, 2015
RNY
