Any suggestions on how to stop this viscous night time snacking? I've only been referred a few weeks ago for GBS and I'm trying my hardest to get a graspe on things, I eat mindlessly at night.. Feel like I'm asleep when I am binging, like I'm not even there.

Any suggestions would be appreciated ?

Make sure you eat throughout the day, including breakfast - even if you are not hungry and need to FORCE it in. Have breakfast.

Be occupied in the evening. Have a plan/schedule, including a scheduled snack that is a measured amount. Eat that when it is time, and then STOP, brush your teeth, and no more food.

Check in with your feelings when you are binging - are you feeling sad? bored? lonely? upset? Identify your feelings and don't allow yourself to 'numb out' during a binge. There is a reason you are doing it.

Get some therapy. I found it really helpful.

Good luck.

It's good that you are working on this now, it'll make later easier.

Try picking up a hobby, or going back to one that you used to like. There are lots of things that you can do to keep your hands busy (and out of trouble). Anything from crafts, puzzle books, colouring books (yep, adults colour too), do a jigsaw puzzle, to whatever you can think of. It wouldn't help every night, but how about taking a class, or doing some volunteer work?

Basically, anything that changes your routine from what you are doing now will help. When my Mom quit smoking, she had to change her routine in order to ensure she didn't start back up. She had a set routine, and then changed it to do something else and it was easier.

I wish you well on your journey

Cathy

Just STOP- COLD TURKEY!!! . I know its easier said than done--- but its a habit more than hunger, and habits can be broken as long as you are consistent. Give yourself a time ... say 7:00 to have a small " healthy " snack...then tell yourself "I'm done--nothing until tomorrow!!!

You've gotten some great suggestions above!!! Brushing and flossing teeth sounds silly but it really can help. Mouthwash always makes things taste awful afterwards as well. Distractions - keeping busy- water-crushed ice-go to bed- reading...whatever works for you... just have a plan for when the situation arises.

You said it best yourself.....that you eat mindlessly. But guess what, you now have AWARENESS! The saying "you cant change what you don't acknowledge" holds true. You identified your problem....so you are well on your way to changing it.

Its awesome that you are being proactive and working on this stuff ahead of time!!!!!!

I took up knitting and crocheting. Now I can't stop knitting whenever I have time on my hands. Considering how busy my hands are, I can't eat at the same time. Good idea to do something with both hands involved, as most of us can still manage to read and eat at the same time. lol

keeps me busy, and I have something to show for it.

if there is something you are interested in taking up, there are lots of how-to videos on utube.

I know this is what really worked for me.

My Social Worker told me to never eat in front of the tv even for snacking. She said eat at the table all of the time. That same night I was going to get a snack but then my husband reminded me I would have to go to the table. I was in the middle of watching a tv show and didn't want to miss it and then realized it was head hunger.

I don't snack now. I just couldn't be bothered. That works for me. Maybe it will help you.

You can't eat whats not there. Don't bring junk food into the house, and bypass the isles completely when you are shopping.
