In Hospital After Emergency Surgery!

Hi Everyone! I posted last week about having a lot of abdominal pain and sitting in my local ER for almost 24hrs just to have them tell me they couldn't help me and I needed to go Toronto.

Well i went home and felt a tad better so I waited it out until I could see my surgeon on Friday. He took one look at me and my CT Scan and admitted me right away for emergency surgery.

I had a huge umbilical hernia with trapped intestines, two Petersons hernias with trapped bowel and they also did an endoscopy during surgery and found lots of ulcers in my pouch and bowel (marginal ulcers, for which I had NO symptoms of).

sooo I am all fixed up now, but in tremendous pain. They had to put in TEN trocars so I have 10 more lovely incisions to add to my 5 from the RNY. So much pain, but a much different pain as I know this will heal.

So I will be hanging out here at TWH for a few more days. Funny, they know I had an RNY bypass and they bring me a gigantic plate of pasta, a huge bun with butter and chocolate cake for dessert! Ummm...I'll pass thanks!

anyone else ever had hernias post surgery? I am 16 months post op.

Wow what an awful thing for you to go through. Sending positive healing vibes.

Was there anything leading up to you going to the ER thinking back that you think now could have been signs. Did the hospital have any idea what could have caused the ulcers in your pouch?

I am so sorry that you are going through this right now. I wish you are speedy recover

My gawd that meal is so wrong post any intestinal surgery.... Should be Ensure  and jello, and they'd bring the sugar versions, you'd have to ask for sugar free! Hospitals are trying to kill us.

I've had two Petersons repaired and 4 ventral/umbilical.  I didn't find the recovery painful at all but then again compared to the bowel obstructions from having them, there was no comparison.

Tracey was this hereditary in your case? Sounds incredibly painful.

Definitely not hereditary. It was the worse pain ever.

Sorry maybe I misunderstood. Was the bowl obstruction because of your wls or was it just something that happened to you. I remember you having said you had the lap-band so I was curious if the obstructions happens to people who have the band in the same way as people that had RNY or other weight loss surgeries.

I am concerned in my case and the reason I am asking you is because since surgery I have had constant issues with constipation. I know TMI (sorry)  I know. I have literally tried everything under the sun and nothing and I mean nothing helps so I really fear the possibility of an abstraction happening to me at some point. Ottawa has not offered anything of use of course.

Anyone can get obstructions. It is bowel kinking or getting caught. I have not had constipation and still have had many. You would know if you had one as the pain is intense and I dry heaved for hours. The longest one lasted 17 hours and I was booked for emergency surgery but it let go an hour before so they cancelled it. Many of them resolve themselves. When they finally caught one on the scan where they saw it stuck then they knew it was an internal hernia and needed surgery. The kinking only usually fixes itself.
