Effexor XR after RNY

My surgery is scheduled for March 25th.  This process has been a very quick one for me and I don't have enough time to be weaned off Effexor XR and changed to something else before surgery.  My nurse practitioner said I could continue taking it for now, and if needed, I could be switched after surgery.  Does anyone take Effexor XR after RNY and have you had to up your dose?

I was taking Effexor at the time of my surgery and continued afterward with no issues.  I was advised to open the capsule and swallow the contents (they are like tiny little beads inside). DO NOT CHEW.

Ask your centre if this is okay for you too.

I was taking Pristiq prior to surgery & was switched to Effexor XR in the hospital. As Karen said you open the capsules & I mix the little dots with applesauce or yogurt. I did miss one day in hospital but I was so focussed on what was going on I didn't really notice! My doctor did increase the dosage after because it might not be getting absorbed as much.

No need to open them, I took mine straight pill right from the hospital. You will be fine.

I was told by TWH to change the XR for a regular release type. When I sat with my personal doctor, we discussed the options and because I was taking 300 in 2 XR caps, he suggested that we go for regular and more frequent. SO, I now take a 75 at breakfast and 75 at lunch, but still take a 150 XR at night as we thought it would get absorbed as I would be asleep anyways LOL!

So far, this regime has been working for me ....... I think ...... *scratches head* at least I have no obvious symptoms of depression coming back.....

I hope that helps you out
