What do you do? re: birthday celebrations

I am just over a year post op and my bestie is coming up on her birthday soon,  I always make her a carrot cake for her bday.

Just wondering...does anyone partake in a piece of cake post op.  Or a bite?

When it was my bday, I didn't but I was with someone the other night and she is 2 yrs post op and she said that she was told by her clinic that, everything in moderation.  She was told if you deny yourself it you will overindulge later.

I'm not sure if her reasoning is wise.????

What I have learned is that it's really dependant on the person. "Everything in moderation" sounds (to ME) like a justification statement. Some people can take one bite and be done with it, many others can't. I'm pretty black and white when it comes to food and the "everything in moderation" stance got me to 300 pounds, since I seem to struggle with what moderation means with respect to food. lol

Really it's up to you - can you? Of course you can. Should you? I can't answer that.

Edited to add: Sorry, I meant to respond to the "if you deny yourself you will overindulge later" thing - I call bull**** on that one.

I agree with Karen.  It's very individual.  My first year I chose NOT to have anything at birthday parties because I felt like weight loss was more important than cake. I even chose NOT to have a birthday cake for my own birthday.  After I got to goal I would allow myself a small piece if I wished.

I didn't for at least a year. Now I will have a bite or two of my husbands or whoever is beside me. It's has to be a cake I like otherwise I don't have anything.

You could try a recipe like this or this and alter it a little to be lower in sugar. Sweetener maybe, or honey? Personally I would use carob chips, or perhaps nuts. There's a ton of alternatives out there. Maybe make the carrot cake for her and offer one of these as well and indulge in a small piece.

honey is just another form of sugar. Your body processes it the same.

For my kids birthdays I made an amazing chocolate cake. On the night of their birthdays I had a bite then left the rest. The next night I remembered how great it was. I had a larger piece and made myself extremely sick. Only you know yoiur triggers for over doing it. You might b able to have a bite and walk away but if you know it will lead to more then don't tempt yourself.

I do not touch cake but that is me. Fortinos sells a sugar free cake so I buy that and will have a piece of that at my husband or my birthday. I just know I can't touch the real stuff

I can do cake...and case in point I bought a large homemade coconut cream pie for my daughter and my family (she's home from university for reading week) and coconut cream, is her favourite we all had a slice and by all I mean myself included (although mine was smaller), then everyone had a 2nd slice and I had a corner tip....and that's it

it depends on the person, the will power..nothing wrong with having a small piece to celebrate and then wrapping up the rest for her if there are leftovers

prior to surgery 323lbs....4 years post-op maintaining between 108- 114 lb loss.

life is AMAZING when you continue on the right path~!.  Use your surgeons gift to the fullest~!
