HRRH RN/Nur/Social appt. question
I meet with the panel of 3 this week, and I'm curious just how in depth I need to know the hand out. I know they ask questions from it. Do I need to know percentages - as in "4.6% of people have stricture complications, and 1.1% have anastomotic leaks."? Do I need to know which person I see at which follow ups post-op? Or do I just need to know the stages of eating post op and how the roux-en-y works, and that type of thing. Basically, do I need to totally memorize this puppy?
My centre is HRRH.
Thank you for any feedback/guidance on this!
I also meet with the trio this week and am curious to know how much we really need to know.

I had to provide a journal of my food, so make sure you have that. I had to talk to the social worker, I lied because my daddy committing suicide last year and my issues with my mom have no bearing on why I'm fat. The RN was awesome, all I had to do was explain, as best I could, what was going to happen to me and the complications with the surgery (she wants you to SAY that there is a risk of death, informed consent and all that).
Overall it's pretty easy, no sweat. You'll do fine. Good luck!

Yes you will need to know the different stages of eating post op and for how long your on each one. They won't ask you the percentages but they will ask about the complications that can be associated with the procedure.
Good luck ladies! Don't sweat it, it's not that bad. What day are you there? I have my 1 year follow up Wednesday morning. I meet with the nurse and dietician at 8 and 9 then I have to scoot over to Dr Klein for 11:15. :-)

This was the toughest hurdle yet for me. I was asked by the dietitian and social worker to come back after one more month of trying to make some changes. I was extremely honest with them, and because of a few different things I said, they called them red flags, I was asked to come back. I have since gone back, and they passed me. I answered all the 'homework' questions from the hand outs, it was my diet journal that was a concern. She didn't like me snacking in front of tv at night. The social worker asked why I was snacking and I said, bored.......BIG RED FLAG! that is considered emotional eating. No caffeine, fat no higher than 5% and no more than 10g sugar. Kept telling me my protein was low, is still too low, needs me eating 70 g protein a day and at every single mean and snack. I do struggle with that, and she wasn't happy that I was mainly getting my protein from a shake....she wanted me getting it from real food. Didn't like that I was eating my lunch at work at my desk, didn't like that I had too many fruit and veges, not enough protein, every meal has to be a balanced meal (so 1/4 plate starch, 1/4 plate protein and 1/2 plate veges), didn't like if I had any frozen meals, had to change cream to milk in my coffee, had to change to decaf. I had it tough, I won't lie, in comparison to so many I have read on this website. The nurse is a breeze, she is just going over all your medications and vitals, and then you will have 10-12 viles of blood drawn.
So don't memorize the hand out, although I just kept going over them. Oh ya remember what vitamins you need to take after surgery!!! Remember the measurements of your stomach now, and post-op and how much it will hold now and later.
I also was at HRRH. She also asked me to explain how the RNY surgery worked. I am so not trying to freak you out, I just noticed the other posters said it wouldn't be a problem......and I wanted you to hear from someone who had a tougher go of it :) I hope you guys fly through, keep us posted and GOOD LUCK :)
Thanks mum2TNT!!!!!
I will be 100% honest as well. My life is insane, and if they think they can help me do better, I will be all for their feedback - even if it means going back again.
I have been seeing a nutritionist already, and spoken to a therapist... They are both totally supportive of this decision.
Hopefully I know everything well enough. I'll review again tonight.
